@Tom_Kelly2121 I think this also ties in with the whole idea of being "born-again." It is all about starting new and not being defined by your past #rel2121s18
It was interesting to learn that Trump got his slogan from a previous one when a lot of people think it was this great idea that he came up with #rel2121s18
@ejrelinam This was something that I also enjoyed. Although the book was tough to get through, it did open my eyes to a lot of things people should be more aware about and the impacts that religion had on big events in history #rel2121s18
The idea of a "born-again" christian seems like an attempt to win over the people and pretend like you've come to this big realization. This, along with things like Oral Roberts threatening that God would "call him home" if he didn't raise a certain amount of money #rel2121s18
@denniserel2121 This course really gave a lot of insight on the hidden backstories of events that many people know and learn about and I found it very interesting #rel2121s18
This course taught me a lot about different religions and deepened my understanding of ones I already knew about. It opened my eyes to a lot of aspects that aren't well known. #rel2121s18
@jmo16cREL2121 I see your view of this because I feel like a lot of these students joined these groups not knowing what to fully expect, but knowing they wanted something different and something more than what they were used to #REL2121S18
I don't think that deprogramming was an effective way of trying to rid these people of their ways because they were basically doing the same thing as brainwashing but just for an opposite reason #rel2121s18
I find it interesting how both the Social Gospel and the Gospel of wealth both recognize a common problem in society with the wealthy playing a key role, but with one seeing the rich as the source of the problem and one seeing them as the solution #rel2121s18
@klc15m That's a really good point and we do see it over and over again in history. We tend to blame an entire population for a few people's actions. #rel2121s18
I think it's interesting how we repeatedly see leaders attempting to "Americanize" different religions such as Judaism. What is your take on what exactly Americanizing is? #rel2121s18
@pad16c @morrison_alanna Yes, one example i have written down is how the puritans established these praying towns as a way to "civilize" the "lazy and savage" Indians and to make them more useful in their eyes. #REL2121S18
to me, the connection between utopia and sexuality is the idea that they can and will control the habits of their people in order to maintain this image that they have and to ensure the future of the community withholds this as well #REL2121S18
It was said that many claimed to be Christians but that they were only Christian in name. I feel like this is the same case for people today, but what truly qualifies someone to be able to call themselves a Christian? #rel2121s18
@amw17b I feel as if Ann Lee served the same role as a priest would in confession today. All things said remain confidential unless they confess harm to themselves or others so I'm sure if they confessed something like sexual activity there would be repercussions. #REL2121S18
