Meet our #WomanCrushWednesday Pauline Wanjiku Ngige, a committee member of the Kiburu Community Forest Association (CFA). Through tree-planting, Pauline and her CFA have given a new lease of life to the South Kinangop Forest, in the process revitalising the water catchment area. The group’s work has also reduced erosion and siltation through riparian restoration, greatly improving the quality of water in the local streams.
"Our goal was to ensure the sustainability of our resources and to leave a legacy of environmental stewardship. We understood the gravity of the situation and sensitised the younger generation on the importance of the forest and the impact its destruction would have on their lives and the lives of future generations. Our actions spoke louder than words." -- Pauline Wanjiku Ngige. #WCW

🌳🙏 Seven years ago, we united to save the Kaptagat Forest, a critical water tower in jeopardy. On the left, you can see the Chepkorio site in 2021, just before the Fifth Annual Kaptagat Tree Planting Edition. On the right, is a drone-captured image of the same place, with a recovering forest characterised by a high survival rate of indigenous tree seedlings. This incredible transformation wouldn't have been possible without your support. Thank you for making a difference! 🌿💚

@EliudKipchoge, the legendary marathon runner, expressed his delight that 1:59 has inspired forest conservation. The community-led annual tree planting event is the brainchild of Dr. @Kiptoock - PS, @KeTreasury & Patron, #Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme.
Speaking during the thanksgiving ceremony of PS Kiptoo at St. Alphonsus Mutei Girls, President Ruto said the Government will establish 18 tree seedling plantations through the @KEFRIHQ to help the country grow 15 Billion Trees by 2032. He notes that the Government will work closely with the private sector and NGOs to ensure the availability of tree seedlings across the country.
"I'd like to thank Dr @Kiptoock for going above and beyond his call of duty in leading the restoration of #Kaptagat ecosystem. I will follow in your footsteps to adopt an ecosystem. Tree planting is everyone's responsibility, not just of the government. It is a matter of life and death. Just like we have done the sub-two minutes tree planting race, this is a race against time because of climate change. Let us heed the President's call to plant 15 Billion trees." @HonTuya - Cabinet Secretary, @Environment_Ke.
@EliudKipchoge @Kiptoock @KeTreasury@CEO_WWFKenya assured President Ruto that conservation partners will commit to delivering his directive to increase the country’s tree cover to 30% by 2032.
In an exhilarating symbolic race against time to highlight the urgency of climate action, His Excellency Dr. @WilliamsRuto – President, Republic of Kenya, joined legendary Olympic and marathon champions @EliudKipchoge and @VivianCheruiyot , along with Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and County leadership, in a thrilling 1 minute :59 seconds tree planting challenge in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The charged sub-two-minute challenge, inspired by Kipchoge's legendary 1:59 marathon achievement, embodies the urgency of combating climate change through the ambitious goal of planting and growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
