Overall, the identification of these metabolic phenotypes provides insight into the dysfunctional immune response in acutely ill COVID-19 patients and provides a means to predict and track disease severity and/or design metabolic therapeutic regimens.

Metabolic profiling also revealed MDSCs that expressed elevated CPT1a and VDAC1 in COVID19 and correlated with disease severity. scRNAseq provided clues to their possible function including release of alarmins (S100a8/9) and chemokines (CXCL2/3).
