At the risk of being a developer introducing some nuance into the BC condo bailout debate, some thoughts:

1. We don’t yet know how much the feds will pay for these units.

2. Some large share of the population thinks that there should be such a thing as social housing for low income Canadians.

3. To the extent that they accept that, governments therefore have to build or buy.

4. As evidenced by Toronto’s vote yesterday (and another Ontario mayor I heard on a recent affordable housing panel bragging about how much higher performance standards are for social projects), government will always build for more than private developers.

5. In a down market, like today’s, government has an opportunity to buy for much less than it builds.
