@Alan_Couzens Alan do you have a recovery z1/z2 protocol for first 3 months of athletes coming back from major lower leg surgery — wks 1-6 non weight bearing, wks 6-10 boot etc? Skierg? Single leg stationary bike? Weirdly can find very little online.
@Alan_Couzens Thanks, Alan. This is interesting. Apologies, if you’ve covered this elsewhere. Hoping you can give
Instructions for identifying sympathetic overreaching. Metrics we might see on Garmin? Bloodwork? HRV4Training app? Thanks in advance
@CEdwards1701@Alan_Couzens Thx, Carly. Perfect for localized injury. Me: Nerve damage plus chronic peroneal tendonopathy. When I open my stride — go from a 9:00 z2 mile pace (⬇️ form) to 7:30 — proprioception and mechanics improve. But I’m in z3. So Q is how to improve 🏃♀️ base so I can get to z2 7:30?
@Alan_Couzens Thanks Alan. Grateful. This has been a tricky 8 yr puzzle. Determined to keep moving. But ultimately love to run. Appreciate the perspective: Work -Ego=Happiness.
@hjluks thx for great work. Age 52 long time endurance athlete. Running after back problems. (35 miles/wk). Mild Achilles strain a wk ago. Loading per your article. When to return to running? Mild sensation first steps. No daytime pain. No lump/swelling. How to judge? Thx!
@feelthebyrn1 Thanks for all the great content Gordo. Wondering if you can point me to resources to figure breakpoint without a home lactate test. Have a garmin 945 and HRV4training. 51, 6’ and 165. My practice: biking, running, strength almost everyday for at least an hour for 15 years
@EricTopol Thanks for this. So question: how would you recommend that an otherwise healthy middle aged person who has had mild COVID work with their GP to asses whether they are at increased risk?
@Alan_Couzens thanks for terrific content here and on substack. Q: I’m 51, run, swim, bike, erg. 5k =20:00. Having trouble with duration due to L4,L5 arthritis and disk issues, nerve pain. Fast andshort can be less painful than slow long. Do you have advice on adding easy volume?
@feelthebyrn1 Thanks for content! Age 50. Training daily — run, swim, bike, erg for 15 yrs, five with nerve impingement at L3, L4/sciatica. Sometimes going slow more painful than fast. Sometimes rest =pain. Confusing. Grateful for recs on nerve/back pain and endurance training.
@hjluks Howard, I've appreciated your insights about avoiding surgery. I'm a 50 yr old runner. Like many, I have ankle instability from long-ago sprains -- led to injuries up the kinetic chain. Do u have thots on how to non-surgically stabilize the ankle - exercises, sleeves?
@Alan_Couzens Hi Alan, would be grateful if you could give some guidanc/process to a fit 50 year old runner on a budget who grew up body surfing in the Pacific, wants to move to lap swimming and could benefit from help with technique. In person coaching? Virtual coaching? Online resource?
@chefsymon hey chef. Thanks for supporting home cooks! Hoping you can point me to steps to sous vide and finish on a smoker this 12 lb brisket. Also can you tell me the name of this cut of brisket? Thanks!
@meathead hey meathead. Thanks for all the content. Hoping you can point me to steps to sous vide and finish on a smoker this 12 lb brisket. Also can you tell me the name of this cut? Thanks!
@Alan_Couzens Hi Alan, been following recent on with interest. I’m 50 with mid 50s vo2 max, resting HR ~40. Obviously want longevity. My body has always responded best to threshold-esh workouts and some intervals + 30% strength. About 10 hrs/wk. Wondering if you think I should modify.
@sweatscience Yeah, strange, seems like a common issue, especially in middle age, with potential long term implications. Yet very little guidance out there — and I’m getting great care in NYC.
@sweatscience Thanks, Alex. Big fan. Future running story idea on chronic ankle and knee tendinopathy: the latest on whether to rehab or go for surgery to replace and move to a new sport. The science is confusing about outcomes, as well as risk of running on an aging rubber band.
