Yesterday, at the hospital pharmacy counter, an old man was carefully holding his prescription like it was something precious.

When we stepped outside, I asked,

Uncle, Koi hai sath main ? can i drop you home ?

He smiled, nahi beta aadat bigad jaayegi, akela chalna seekh liya hai.

We spoke for a minute.

He’s been living alone for 10 years.
his son works in another city calls every sunday, sends money, reminds him to take medicines.

Pension comes, neighbours nod, routine is fixed.

“Sab theek hai,” he said but after a pause, Bas ghar mein kisi ke aane ki awaaz yaad aati hai, koi puchne wala nahi hai

His eyes didn’t tear up they just looked tired from waiting.

As he walked away, holding his medicine bag like company i realised some people don’t fear illness they fear going back to an empty home.

In a country famous for family, our elders are learning how to live without one.

The new epidemic isn’t disease, It’s being alive with no one noticing.

Take care of your loved ones especially your parents.
