Blockchain is immutable by design. That's its greatest strength and in this context, its greatest vulnerability.
Ethereum isn't immune either.
Around 65% of all ETH has its public key exposed through prior transactions. The same logic applies past exposure is permanent, regardless of what the protocol does next.
A hard fork secures future transactions. It cannot rewrite history.
And it's not just Satoshi.
Roughly 6.9 million BTC. That's 1/3 of the total supply sitting in addresses where public keys are permanently exposed, making them targets for future quantum at-rest attacks.
No fork. No BIP. No upgrade will ever un-expose those keys.
Let's talk about Satoshi's wallet.
Satoshi is holding approximately 1.1 million $BTC using an older Pay-to-Public-Key format that exposes the public key even without a sending transaction.
That public key has been sitting exposed on-chain since 2009. Forever!!!
And that's great. Genuinely.
But here's what's quietly being glossed over in all these announcements:
Upgrading your chain going forward doesn't protect what's already on-chain.
The damage is already done. The history is permanent.
The crypto industry noticed.
Ethereum launched a $2M quantum defense team. Bitcoin developers shipped BIP-360 to testnet. Solana opened a public post-quantum testnet in December 2025. Algorand executed its first Falcon-1024 mainnet transaction.
Everyone is moving. Fast. 🏃
Quantum computing just stopped being a "future problem."
In March 2026, Google Quantum AI published a paper cutting the estimated qubits needed to break Bitcoin's encryption by 20x, down to under 500,000.
Google itself set 2029 as their own internal migration deadline.
