The Burj Khalifa rises 828 meters. Getting water up is the famous problem. Getting waste back down was the messier one.

When the tower opened, Dubai’s sewage plants were already over capacity. The city’s growth had outrun the pipes. For years, tanker trucks formed long convoys to haul wastewater to treatment plants, drivers sometimes waiting hours to dump a load.
Inside the building, sewage can’t just free-fall 160 floors. That would smash pipes and blow toilets on the way down. Engineers designed the stacks so waste spirals along the walls, keeping an air core in the middle and bleeding off pressure before it hits the municipal line at the base.

The tower got built. The sewer network spent the next decade catching up. Dubai is still pouring billions into deep sewage tunnels so the trucks don’t have to do that job anymore.
