You are right @KKat7531, unlike Web2, security in the Web3 space really has to focus on prevention rather than focus on response.
Centralization is the most basic feature to distinguish a Web2 and Web3 application, but it is also this property that helps security in Web2 not be as heavily focused on prevention as Web3.
Centralized power makes it possible for the admin team of a Web2 application to quickly make decisions to patch or upgrade that application without the delay caused by decentralized governance like Web3. Furthermore, Web2 applications also focus on authentication and control of user data, which includes sensitive information such as National ID, residential address, bla bla, which helps minimize, investigate and respond to security threats. The opposite happens for Web3 applications, which give control of the data back to the user, the user being identified only through the blockchain address and public key. It will become more difficult for Web3 applications to trace the identity of a hacker with just his address.
So, with a Web3 application, it's best not to get hacked, use attack and exploitation prevention measures ASAP.
Why is crucial to be proactive when it comes to spotting vulnerabilities in web3? ⚠️
In Web2 security If data on a server is encrypted by ransomware, it can be “rolled back” to a clean version from a backup.
However, in web3, if attacks occur on the blockchain, these cannot be reversed.
This highlights the importance of prevention instead of remediation. Compared to web2, security of decentralised systems needs to be more proactive and prevention-focused, rather than response-focused.
Today's @MultichainOrg hack is a sad reminder of the systemic risks tokens face from bridges.
