Former Biden administration officials like Jake Sullivan and Tony Blinken should honestly been seen and not heard. They actively aided and abetted one of the worst atrocities of recent decades. That's on them. They are directly complicit and responsible. Now they're saying they couldn't have known better and that they have "regrets." Regret isn't enough. If you got something so fundamentally wrong that other people got right, it means that there's something deeply and irrevocably flawed with your moral and political compass. People like that should not be in positions of power again. Any future Democratic administration should exclude these people from top appointments. They knew exactly what was happening when it was happening. It's not like we had more information about Israel's behavior than they did. Saying that you "didn't know" is not enough. If anything, it's an insult.

That doesn't mean that these people can't run for office or be involved in Democratic politics in some modest way. I'm a believer in a big tent. But there should be some accountability. If you get the big questions wrong, you shouldn't be promoted. The Democratic Party has a lot of smart people who were right on Gaza, when it came at a cost to their own career prospects. We don't need to hire the same people next time around. That would send a dangerous message, and it would enable more of the same abuses of power.
