Guys 🙈 I’m so so thrilled to announce that I am now represented by THE @HerringAli. She might be the kindest, most supportive, most capable person I’ve met, and I feel so fortunate to have her as my advocate and cheerleader as I build my career as an author!! If you are writing, KEEP WRITING. If you are querying, KEEP QUERYING! It took a lot of rejection and growth to get to this point, and so many supportive friends, but it does happen for those who don’t quit!

"Today’s order does not undo the many harms created by the disparate treatment of spot bitcoin products."
"First, our arbitrary and capricious treatment of applications in this area will continue to harm our reputation far beyond crypto. Diminished trust from the public will inhibit our ability to regulate the markets effectively."
"Second, our disproportionate attention on these filings has diverted limited staff resources away from other mission critical work. Over ten years, likely millions of dollars of staff time has gone toward blocking these applications."
"Third, our actions here have muddied people’s understanding of what the SEC’s role is."
"Fourth, by failing to follow our normal standards and processes in considering spot bitcoin ETPs, we have created an artificial frenzy around them. Had these products come to market in the way other comparable products typically have, we would have avoided the circus atmosphere in which we now find ourselves."
"Fifth, we have alienated a generation of product innovators within our space."
From an amazing Michael Crichton talk:
“Media carries with it a credibility that is totally undeserved. You have all experienced this, in what I call the Murray Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. (I refer to it by this name because I once
discussed it with Murray Gell-Mann, and by dropping a famous name I imply greater importance to myself, and to the effect, than it would otherwise have.)
Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article
on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the
article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues.
Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page,
and forget what you know.
That is the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. I'd point out it does not operate in other arenas of life. In ordinary life, if somebody consistently exaggerates or lies to you, you soon discount everything
they say. In court, there is the legal doctrine of falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus, which means untruthful in one part, untruthful in all. But when it comes to the media, we believe against
evidence that it is probably worth our time to read other parts of the paper.”
A couple of additional thoughts on the announcement of the exit of @Spiff_Inc.
1. This is the place! Large successful exits with top-shelf acquirers like https://t.co/cN44sMB9PV in our market are a sign that Utah continues to over-index in successful outcomes, particularly in the core strength of B2B SaaS companies. We are hoping that this is something akin to what the Omniture acquisition brought to Utah in terms of a large tech company doubling down on Utah. We believe that CRM/ Utah is a perfect fit in terms of building the GTM and support cloud for companies.
2. Keep learning! The progression that we saw in @jerondanielpaul and @matthewbstapleton from the Capshare days and even from the days when Jeron and I were kicking around the Spring Capital office speculating about the rise of of SaaS as a category are remarkable. Love the humility and focus that they bring to building businesses. So much of the success of Spiff was attracting amazing talent like @mmmries@albertcandari@mattgahr@samandersen @oxanajurosevic @jpmaitre Anna Fisher and so many others! It takes charisma and vision to attract these folks and humility to retain and keep them interested.
3. Even with a stacked team, startups are always hard. We were honored to invest in Spiff when it was still at its conceptual stages. Despite the experience of this team and the network of advisors and investors that they had around them, there was still some challenging times in finding and refining p/mkt fit, surviving the pandemic, overcoming challenges of growth and leadership etc... Loved working with our friends and investors to help make this successful including: early local syndicate members @bencapell and @diogomyrrha. Series A lead @seanjacobsohn and Series B lead @arshammem and finally Series C lead and acquirer, @salesforce!
Finally, hang in there, this has been a challenging 2+ years in startup land. You can do it, good stuff is still happening!
One of my biggest regrets in life is not meeting Rabbi Sacks. He was a man with unparalleled brilliance and love for his people.
His daughter spoke about what he’d tell us to do today or more precisely what he’d tell us NOT to do.
This made me get all choked up.
Worth a watch.

"Mr. Gensler is holding bitcoin spot ETPs hostage in his cryptomarket power grab. Until crypto exchanges register with the SEC, he won’t authorize spot bitcoin ETPs. Arbitrary regulation and regulatory overreaches are recurring themes of the Gensler SEC and the Biden Administration. Is he trying to match Lina Khan’s losing record at the Federal Trade Commission?"
