In my 15th year as a Basketball Coach, I had a huge realization.
I was spending more time on mental performance than Xs & Os. My athletes needed it more.
I leaned into it & the results were better teams & healthier players.
Here are 4 Steps I use to teach mental skills.

Coaching is incredibly rewarding for so many reasons.
What do you enjoy most about it, and what's the toughest hurdle you encounter in your coaching journey?
Focusing on the people you lead instead of the scoreboard helps everyone win.
You create a culture of belonging & accountability that leads to a more successful team!
The challenge is that this is not how everyone measures success.
How do you share what matters to you?
Focusing solely on wins limits your athletes and your coaching.
If you want to create a culture that develops people, you have to change your approach.
Build better people, win more games.
Athletes do not need a one-size-fits-all approach to coaching.
Players are at their best when coaching is tailored to their individual needs.

This week 25 years ago I lost a friend to the senseless act of drunk driving.
Each year I try to remember him and share his story with the #ChucksChallenge (explained below).
Feel free to read, share, join in, or all the above.

As adults, we need to stop 'stealing the struggle' from our kids.
When we 'steal the struggle', we steal their opportunity for growth & learning.
We need to prepare them for the path (teach resilience, reflection, and self-respect), but we can't prepare the path for them.
As coaches, executives, educators and decision-makers, it’s essential to understand the key differences between transactional and transformational leadership.

@BBallImmersion We have also worked hard to work in partnership with our coaches & parents educating everyone on psychological impact of sport.
Basketball needs to be fun & healthy experience for all involved .
We also have had to acknowledge that this is not what everyone wants in a club
One of the hardest things we’ve had to do as youth basketball parents is say NO—no to more games, no to playing on multiple teams—to protect our kids from the “too many games” challenge. FOMO is real, and saying no is hard.
Here’s why we did it 🧵
@BBallImmersion It has started with building schedules around finding or creating meaningful competition.
No travel for travels sake.
Spending thousands of dollars to attend a big name tourney that has 16 minute straight halves is a waste of time and money.
@coachk424 A5: Helping them make connections. Asking them why we are forcing base? What happens when we do that effectively? What are other teams hoping by forcing us to the baseline?

@coachk424 A4: When watching film, I want to ask questions that put the onus on the athlete in a non-judgmental way.
What did you see? What are the options you had other than the one you chose? Would you do the same thing next time?

@coachk424 A3: We design practices to mirror what is happening in games. We replicate the advantages and rotations that we will see in games. How can we become more effective at attacking the rotations and coverages we see regularly. #ecRACAchat
@coachk424 A2: I agree it is hard to score if you get stuck behind the backboard so we teach go base and try to come back to the middle. Read the defender and react accordingly.

@coachk424 A1: On Offense we don't really prioritize the baseline drive but we don't limit players from attack there if an opportunity exists. Especially off a kick, swing, swing, where they can attack a closeout. We want paint touches.
