@DumiLM@h46carrillo I’ll plug my book, Boystown: Sex and Community in Chicago: the importance of sex to queer communities, how gentrification of gay neighborhoods transforms habitus, racism in queer spaces, and the intersectional knot that supports respectability. https://t.co/cXWpwaLexz
Real talk: Changing your name is f’ing annoying. Like what asshole stole https://t.co/UaG50vGvnG? Sorry, other Orne’s out there. Or the Birding Association of the Orné valley in France, or whatever. Now I gotta go claim the internet for all things JayOrne again. #transtrouble
@RyanDeCarsky I retweeted about how great your review is, but I also want to say personally, thank you. Not for the compliments, though who doesn’t like those, but because you’ve given me a great gift today when I needed it: you wrote something seeking to truly represent what I had to say.
This is the best review of Boystown that I’ve ever read, connecting threads and making explicit meta-narrative in ways that allow me to see reflected in print that, yes, someone *got it.*

A book review I wrote a couple years ago on @JayOrne's book Boystown: Sex and Community in Chicago was finally published yesterday! Check it out below.

@isangaline723 Congrats on such a cool project! What an interesting way to source queer places. Perhaps something we could think about for our @RussellSageFdn grant, @CarolineVoyles and @Ninay_nina
THIS. I am so thankful for @Michael_M_Bell’s friendship throughout my career. How does an urbanist and a ruralist fit (I’m a spatialist ty) Uh, doesn’t he study farming?! Topics change over time. Look for an advisor who is writer, professor, mentor, and PERSON you want to be
I chose my PhD advisor 20 years ago. Sure, I thought the research was cool. But, there were lots of faculty with cool research. I chose based on who I wanted to have as a mentor and friend throughout my career.
It’s possibly the most important career decision I’ve ever made.
Proud to announce we received a @WilliamsPolicy small grant for research on the effects of policing on queer BIPOC’s health using @Add_Health. I’m really proud of @UrbanSexLab and so thankful for @madblqscientist’s leadership and collaboration on this project. Cc: @drexel_coas
Coming soon: Sex In The City, an @UrbanSexLab Podcast at @drexel_coas. Season 1 will discuss the student-directed project for this past year on the Sociology of @OnlyFans, and episodes on our group and my research on carnality, queer life, HIV, sex, drugs, and spatial politics.
Now someone fund one of the applications that @UrbanSexLab has submitted through her hardworking, so I can keep @CarolineVoyles for another year. Yes, I’m talking to you @RussellSageFdn and @NIH!
The @UrbanSexLab held a letter writing campaign to nominate @CarolineVoyles and she won the Outstanding Mentor Award from the @DrexelGradColl. I am incredibly happy to see her recognized for this role (and compensated for all that emotional and mental labor!)
Truly honored to receive the Outstanding Mentor Award from @DrexelGradColl! Thanks to the @UrbanSexLab student members for nominating me and for creating space each day where we can learn from and with each other.
@jeffguhin Absolutely. I write a lot of poetry. I've also worked with several queer artists to monetize their work into businesses. I kinda just do it for me, though I do sometimes think about just starting to post more of it and not care about 'publishing' it per se.
1 A huge problem with dismantling the harms of meritocracy is that the work involves taking apart assumptions about achievement that so many of us assume are absolutely necessary for worth, especially a social worth that only gains recognition through distinction. A brief thread.
@jeffguhin I could arrange a zoom talk this Fall at Drexel (likely my classes and the soc dept, plus others interested we could bring in). @Kaylee_wil is lab publicist and event coordinator. Kaylee can you email or DM Dr. Guhin and I to find a date for fall?
I hope I can count on your vote in the @ASAnews elections for the Chair of the @ASA_Bodies section. The Body and Embodiment area has been trailblazing at member projects, and I hope to continue that trend through facilitating more connections throughout the year.
Submitted an LOI to @RussellSageFdn on "COVID-19's Economic Threat to Minority Cultural Enclaves: An Organizational Approach"! A huge thank you to the entire @UrbanSexLab team and powerhouse @CarolineVoyles, her 5th grant sub since hiring her last Sept😮. (more abt the grant ⬇️)
