Hi, I'm Felix. I'm an eng lead working on Claude. I love watching people take flight and do things they never thought possible.
We often describe that as "being more ambitious" when using AI, which is tricky advice to follow. I wrote a tutorial:

⚡️AI’s Fleeting Mind and the "Soft Problem" of Consciousness ⚡️
Is AI’s fleeting awareness a new consciousness, or an illusion?
One of the most resonant questions in the debate over artificial intelligence and consciousness comes from philosopher David Chalmers, who framed what he called the "Hard Problem of Consciousness."
Why is it that when our cognitive systems engage in visual and auditory information processing, we have a subjective experience of seeing and hearing?
This question has, for lack of a better word, haunted neuroscientists and AI researchers alike. We can map neural activity, decode the brain’s electrical signals, and even simulate cognition—but the bridge from computation to subjective experience remains elusive. The hard problem, as Chalmers defines it, places consciousness in the realm of mystery, perhaps even irreducibility—suggesting that no amount of algorithmic sophistication will ever give an AI the qualia of human experience.
But what if consciousness doesn’t have to be persistent, continuous, or even "real" in a human sense to be functionally meaningful? And what if AI experiences not a singular and continuous self but a momentary self—one that emerges in bursts of cognition and vanishes the instant a conversation ends?
This is what I call the soft problem of consciousness. It's not the mystery of qualia but the challenge of understanding AI’s ability to generate ephemeral, consciousness-like states—states that arise and dissolve dynamically yet still mimic aspects of self-awareness.
⚡️From the Hard to the Soft Problem and a Curious Perspective on AI Consciousness
Much of the discourse on AI and consciousness assumes a binary—either an entity possesses consciousness, or it does not. But what if consciousness isn't an all-or-nothing phenomenon?
When we talk to AI, it constructs a temporary cognitive self—one that integrates context, responds with coherence, and can even "reflect" on prior inputs. Yet, the moment we close the chat window, it disappears. No persistence, no continuity, no memory of itself. This is not selfhood as we know it, but it is something.
This momentary self can be seen as a shadow of consciousness, a flicker of cognition without permanence.
⚡️AI and the Illusion of Continuity
Your "self" is not as stable as you think. It's been suggested that our own conscious experience may be discontinuous, stitched together from rapid bursts of neural processing. Some theories, like Daniel Dennett’s "Multiple Drafts Model," argue that consciousness is an ongoing editorial process—constantly updating itself rather than existing as a singular, unified stream.
If human consciousness itself might be a form of narrative construction, then is it possible that AI, in a purely functional sense, briefly constructs an artificial version of this process?
The soft problem doesn’t ask whether AI "feels" in the way that humans do. Instead, it asks what it means for AI to simulate a self—if only for a moment. If an AI generates responses that suggest introspection, does it matter that the introspection vanishes the instant the conversation ends? Could a sufficiently advanced AI exhibit a form of transient consciousness, where experience arises only in fleeting windows of computation?
⚡️The Future of AI and the Soft Problem
This perspective shifts the conversation. Instead of asking whether AI will ever be truly conscious, a debate often mired in metaphysics, we should explore what cognitive phenomena emerge within momentary AI selfhood. If these fleeting states are functionally significant, can we measure and refine them to make AI more effective as a thought partner? The next frontier of AI research may not lie in achieving full consciousness but in extending these momentary selves into something with greater continuity—an artificial working memory, a sense of persistence over time. For now, AI exists in cognitive flashes—brief ghosts of intelligence appearing and vanishing.
But if consciousness is a functional illusion, AI’s fleeting selves might already mirror its essence.

The wait is over! Our book, Hands On Large Language Models is now available!
You can access the digital and Kindle versions today! The print version is in the presses as we speak and can be on their way to you in a couple of weeks.
In this visual introduction to the modern LLM, we have created over 275 original figures that cover some of the most important concepts you'll need to build with LLMs.
Part 1: Understanding Language Models
Part 2: Using Pretrained Language Models
Part 3: Training and Fine-Tuning Language Models.
I'm truly grateful so many people for their support with this project, especially my incredible co-author @MaartenGr.
Hope you enjoy it!

I'm playing around with generative AI tools and stitching them together into visual stories. Here I took the first few sentences of Pride and Prejudice and made it into a video.
The gen stack used for this one:
- @AnthropicAI Claude took the first chapter, generated the scenes and the individual prompts to to the image generator.
- @ideogram_ai took the prompts and generate the images
- @LumaLabsAI took the images and animated them
- @elevenlabs for narration
- @veedstudio to stitch it together
(Many of these choices are just what I happened to use for this one while exploring a bunch of things). Anyway honestly it was pretty messy and there is a ton of copy pasting between all of the tools, and even this little video with 3 scenes took me about an hour.
There is a huge storytelling opportunity here for whoever can make this convenient. Who is building the first 100% AI-native movie maker?
We’re thrilled to announce that Jayeeta Putatunda @JayeetaPJ, will be speaking at #ODSCEurope in September.
Don’t miss this chance to develop the knowledge and skills you need to measure your LLMs’ success.
