As a parent of a child born free in America, here’s my take on two Olympians also born free here: Eileen Gu and Alysa Liu.

Two paths. Two philosophies. One model of tiger parenting treats a child as a project—gold, fame, branding, nation—all carefully engineered. Impressive? Yes. But whose script is it?

The other: a father who pushed hard, then did the hardest thing—he let his daughter walk away at the peak. Medals, money, momentum—gone. Because her life was hers.That’s the difference. Gold vs. freedom.
Prestige vs. autonomy. Applause vs. ownership.

Freedom is the power to say no—even when the world rewards you for saying yes.

Real success isn’t just raising champions. It’s raising free human beings.

The measure of love isn’t how high your child climbs—but whether they’re free to choose the mountain.

Words fail to express the horror of Saydnaya Prison in Syria where the Assad Regime tortured & brutally killed thousands of political prisoners.

Captain Moutassem Abdel Sater lead our tour and shared his experiences from the first to the last day of his 3 years of unimaginable torture. How he endured the suffering, especially watching his friends tortured and murdered, will forever haunt me. So much admiration for his bravery and dignity through the worst possible atrocities. Saydnaya Prison was the cost of his refused to carry out orders to kill civilians as a Captain in Bashar al-Assad’s military, where he was conscripted to serve.

Our tour ended with a visit to the rooms where these political prisoners (not criminals) were executed and their bodies incinerated. Many were tortured until the moment of their death. While women were not kept at this prison, they were executed in a special section here.

I urge the international community to help in identifying the victims and prosecuting all who committed these atrocities against their own people. While original reports indicate 30,000 were killed here, some believe it could exceed 100,000.

It is said that Assad built more prisons than hospitals in Syria. There is so much relief that Assad is finally gone and people can openly speak about their political opinions without fear of imprisonment. My prayers are with all who endured such suffering and the families who still have loved ones missing.

While there is cautious optimism about the future for Syria, there is also anxiety over what lies ahead. I hope the international community will support the people of Syria and press for an inclusive government with freedom and equal citizenship for all the diverse religious and ethnic communities. That is the only way for a peaceful and stable future, which is what the people of Syria deserve.
