‘A Statement From Central Australian Men’
Earlier this month, over 50 Aboriginal men from across Central Australia gathered at Tilmouth Well (Ilewerr) in the Northern Territory to discuss the return of unprovenanced men’s sacred objects from international museums.
#BREAKING: More than 350 academics and professional staff have signed an open letter in support of students at the pro-Palestine encampments
"We reject the characterisation of these peaceful and urgent student-led protests and encampments as antisemitic"

And I am FROM Gaza was in Gaza just before October 7 yet I only got a couple of short news interviews and certainly no panel invites and no room to offer analysis. Just the same old show us your dead and dying human stories… also I was dropped after being invited on 7:30… twice. To add salt to bias several reporters wasted my time with very long interviews that never saw the light of day. This while my family was literally being chased by the bombs. @ABC #mediabias #gaza #israel #media
I'm an ARC Future Fellow in Sociology, multi-award winning author of 14 books, former lawyer, an Australian Muslim Palestinian Egyptian intimately connected with grassroots community- and yet in the past 7 months I have had a mere 1 invitation for an interview across all platforms of our national broadcaster. That was @abcnews in October 2023. Since then nothing.
ABC radio- zero invites
ABC Q&A- I have not been invited back onto the program since May 2021 and not for want of my name being pitched. There has only been 1 other Palestinian guest, @iamthenas, and he has only been invited once despite the fact Gaza has been a topic in multiple episodes.
This is deliberate, calculated censorship and erasure. There is no question about my qualifications to speak on what is happening, on my scholarly expertise and lived experience. I can run circles around the people on this episode of Insiders for example.
This is anti-Palestinian racism in its purest form. It is racial segregation by our national broadcaster which platforms Anglo guests to offer their ideologically loaded opinions whilst Palestinian experts are excluded and deliberately ignored.
That I am not surprised by the ABC's institutional racism (hello @antoinette_news ) is not the point of this tweet. My point is that we will keep on writing the record of the ABC's role as handmaiden to genocide. We will keep on recording this history of racial segregation and the names of the people who make the decisions and the bystanders who chose silence over principled journalism.
So ABC, are you brave enough to invite me?
FOR IMMEDIATE CIRCULATION
Statement on the Arrest of Hebrew University Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian
Around 5 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2024, Hebrew University professor and internationally renowned feminist scholar Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian was arrested by Israeli police at her home in the Old City of Jerusalem on the charge of incitement to violence. The police raided and searched her home and she is currently undergoing harsh and dehumanizing interrogation. Her lawyer said the charges against her are serious. Information about her release is unknown. Palestinians in Israeli detention suffer physical, emotional, and mental violence. Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian, who holds both Israeli and U.S. citizenship, has been subjected to violent repression and harassment by the Hebrew University for speaking out against the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Furthermore, she was suspended from her teaching duties in March, though later reinstated once it became clear that there is no basis for the allegations against her.
The attack against Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian is one on all Palestinian scholars, students, and activists who bring to light the violent and genocidal nature of the Israeli state, which was on full view of the world during South Africa’s presentation at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). That presentation was sufficiently persuasive that the ICJ almost unanimously found in its provisional ruling on January 26, 2024 that Israel’s attack on Gaza is plausibly genocide. We thus recognize this as an attempt to silence critique of Israeli state violence in a context of a society infused with open genocidal incitement and discourse. In fact, the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir welcomed the arrest and said that it "conveys an important message - whoever incites against the State of Israel, we will take action against them. They will not be able to hide behind their position or any other title." This silencing and repression endangers not only Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian, but also the lives and education of students who study, write, and are part of her intellectual community in the Hebrew University and beyond.
We, as international academics, hold the Hebrew University of Jerusalem responsible for the arrest and detention of Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian because of its persistent and public repression of her academic freedom, which led directly to today’s arrest. We call on international scholars, activists, and people of conscience to demand her immediate release. We are outraged by this unlawful action, and we refuse the continuing violence the Israeli state and its institutions wage against the Palestinian people and those who stand for justice and freedom.
Take action today for Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s immediate release by:
1Writing to Asher Cohen, President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem ([email protected]); Tamir Sheafer, Rector ([email protected]); and Asher Ben-Arieh, Dean of the School of Social Work ([email protected]).
2Contacting your U.S. representatives and demanding that they (1) call for Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s immediate release, and (2) protect the academic freedom of Palestinian scholars, students, and those speaking out against genocide.
3Creating a social media storm by circulating our statement and calling for the immediate release of Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian; use the hashtag #FreeNadera and tag @HebrewU.
What have we, in Australia, learnt in the past few days? (And by learnt what I really mean is what have we not learnt despite over two decades of activists, scholars, lawyers and community writing and speaking about this?) A 🧵
Today the Victorian Ombudsman released a scathing report on the state of prison healthcare. It comes over one year after the findings in Veronica Nelson's Inquest.
How many more Aboriginal people need to die in prison for the Victorian Government to act?

Don't want to share that picture of the First Nations kids tied up for a minor infraction. But you can't tell me that would happen to kids of any other group. It is a product of the entitlement and possessiveness of settler colonialism.
What I find “interesting” about all this is that the President & Chancellor concluded that I’m antisemitic before initiating an investigation. I also find it interesting that they shared this with the media immediately after informing me I was suspended. Character assassination?
The Council is alarmed that some Jewish organisations have been lobbying for the Australian government to refuse entry to people seeking safety from Gaza and have mobilized anti-Palestinian racism and sentiment to do so.
An astonishing essay by @MadocCairns situating the life and work of JGA Pocock against the violent upheavals of American history. The latest instalment of a genre-defying series on key thinkers and intellectuals: https://t.co/xG6RAnLifz
National Apology Day rings especially hollow on a day in which not only are Aboriginal children being removed from their families at higher rates than ever, but our government is also complicit in the genocide of Palestinian children and their families.
Malnourished, homeless, orphaned: The horrors for Gaza’s children. A nurse does ops on 6 dead pregnant women to save their babies. Rarely, if ever, has any country killed, injured & orphaned as many children as quickly as Israel is right now. My new column https://t.co/4ixXKu4Fnb
The Labor MP Josh Wilson has broken ranks with the government, condemning Israel’s bombardment of Gaza as “unconscionable” and declaring that the besieged territory is “being bombed into rubble”.
