@jimrome The only one that is sorta in the same league is the Milwaukee Bucks winning the NBA title in (I believe) their 3rd year in existence. Drafting Kareem helped with that. The Buffalo Sabres made the finals in their 3rd year, as well (IINM)
@kennylanglea I recently read Robert Greenfields book about the Exile On Main Street tour, with all the debauchery that went with it. In variably, Charlie wasn’t an apart of it. He’d be in his room, listening to music….
@FischerKing64 Discovering Williams was a revelation. His resume is small and really varied, but is it is uniformly great. I’d also recommend Butcher’s Crossing.
A friend sent me a copy of this novel in the mail (I don’t get much real mail anymore, so that was an event in itself), and around the same time I had seen some people talking about it on here. Strange coincidence.
It’s an extraordinarily good novel in my opinion. The clarity of the prose is impressive - it strikes just the right balance between describing inner states of people and landscapes and buildings where activities take place. It is a little bit of a downer in that Professor Stoner has a failed marriage, career difficulties, a friend who dies in war. But his quiet determination to pursue his interest in English literature is redemptive. He doesn’t become a very important man - but always doing good work gives his life meaning. Recommended.
