@mandhistorian If getting a PhD in US history isn't an option, the Library of Congress's "By the People" project is a great way to gain access to primary sources and help the world's largest library make its holdings more accessible at the same time.
Because of this, people in San Francisco sometimes used dry ice instead for this prank. It created some great effects as soon as it hit the water, but didn't harm the pumps.
Another thing about Paraguay is that President Hayes became popular there because he mediated a land dispute between Argentina and Paraguay after the Paraguayan War. He resolved it in Paraguay's favor, and a city, a region, a school, and a festival are all named for him.
Two things I know about Paraguay: (1) their founding president had their congress pass *pro*-miscegenation laws! That's right you could only marry someone of *another* race and (2) they thought it'd be a real bright idea to fight a war against Brazil and Argentina simultaneously
@Strangeland_Elf Most of it used to be called the "Northwest" as in the "Northwest Ordinance." Which predates the US Constitution, so this area has been seen as "west" for quite a while now.
@Rosie_Gamgee_ Patriotic dishes! The platter with the cupcakes has an outline of the continental US on it. I've also included a picture of my savory flag dip for fun.
@LeahRay44 It's around 51%. Add in those with expired ones and it's probably higher. Also, until 2001, US citizens didn't need passports to visit Canada or Mexico for tourism, so not having a passport doesn't necessarily mean never having left the country in one's life.
@ImperialGen11 That is because it is generally a part of our culture. Once it's been admitted the US does indeed have a culture, a lot more falls into place.
@FormerlyWTC@Strangeland_Elf Agreed. Places like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite Valley are crowded for a reason, and no one should feel ashamed for wanting to see stupendous scenery just because others do too.
A movie set in the US and intended for a US audience must include enough reality for the US audience to believe it's set in the US. Some things may indeed be exaggerated for effect, but that doesn't mean they have absolutely no basis in reality.
@dilanesper It's an excellent predictor of success as a 1L. But I'm not so sure it's a good predictor of success in passing the bar, which is also necessary for becoming an attorney.
@elsathora Not food, but I'd recommend the San Francisco Bay Model museum in Sausalito (across the bay). It's a large scale (1.5 acre) hydraulic model of the region, with real water. Before powerful computers, scientists used it to model the effects of things like dams and dredging.
