4. There are many skills to learn, e.g., communicating your work, writing, time management, etc. But the most difficult skill to learn is to identify problems that are interesting, i.e., worthwhile solving, and solvable (by you!). Be deliberate about honing this and other skills.

Today a student almost cancelled an important appointment with me, one she needs to have, in order to graduate. She almost cancelled because she couldn’t find childcare. I offered her zoom but she wanted to meet in person. So what did I do? Told her to bring the child with her.
