On August 13, 2025, I had the privilege of joining this year’s Midwest Agricultural Export Summit in Sioux Falls, hosted by South Dakota Trade under the leadership of its dynamic President & CEO, Jesse Fonkert (@JesseFonkert). Jesse not only guided the summit’s program but also graciously hosted the speakers’ dinner on August 12, attended by Governor Larry Rhoden (@GovLarryRhoden), creating a warm atmosphere that fostered meaningful dialogue and strengthened connections.

As Consul General of Japan in Chicago, with South Dakota among the ten states I cover, it was inspiring to see the state’s agricultural leaders, policymakers, and experts shaping a more prosperous and resilient future. Japan is already a trusted partner and an important market for U.S. agricultural products, including high-quality beef, pork, and corn. In 2024, Japan imported approximately $85 million worth of goods from South Dakota, making it the state’s fourth-largest export market. Japan is also the third-largest investor in South Dakota, underscoring the strong economic ties between our regions.

Looking ahead, I am confident that, through platforms like this summit and under the visionary leadership of South Dakota Trade, we can deepen our collaboration to benefit farmers, consumers, and communities in both Japan and South Dakota.
