@HenryPorters I mean part of it was people just heard less about it. It was known crime in cities and people were moving, but also, that wasn't connected to your local pol who got bridges built & money to the district. As for within cities, I mean, a bunch of GOPers won mayoral races.
@ReubenR80027912 This is also why Labor is Australia and NZ have done quite well compared to Europe - even the most right-wing Aussie may say they rightfully conquered the continent, but they can never claim it's truly theirs like a Frenchman whose family has lived in the same 5 miles since 1643.
@ReubenR80027912 I mean, part of the reason they could pull this is off is there are enough minorities in the US, the GOP base keeps pushing those minorities away (see the last 2 years), and the lack of ethnic nationalism that's even in many otherwise left-leaning Europeans.
@TheRubberBaron@mattyglesias@AsteadWH Like, smart right-wingers don't pretend somebody like Ken Paxton will win by more than Cornyn if he does pull it off. They just think narrowly beating Talarico (if it happens) is worth having somebody who be anything less than 100% on the issues they care about.
@TheRubberBaron@mattyglesias@AsteadWH I mean, I think progressives are making the wrong argument. I think they should honestly say, 'yes, he might win by less than centrist politican x, but you don't get bonus votes for winning by more and he'll vote correctly instead of selling out Democratic voters.'
@TheRubberBaron@mattyglesias@AsteadWH I don't think he's completely right but look at the opposite - if Cornyn had won the nomination in TX, the DNC would not be spending anywhere the amount they are right now.
@TheRubberBaron@mattyglesias@AsteadWH I mean Matt's argument would be not to run candidates that will get $200 million dollars spent in opposition on them. If the argument is 'the GOP will oppose you no matter what', the fact Benson isn't getting opposed like this shows something.
@BlueRepublik It's ironic Wayne accidentally seems to agree w/ lefties like me (and most Euros in general) that luck on natural talent is more important than hard work but unfortunately to me, Americans do disagree.
@theleftovers46@DuvalEaton@ReubenR80027912 So the things people don't like (actual violent crime) = not happening
The things people outside of soc cons don't care about (non-violent drug dealing) = happening
We can argue, but the reality is 90% of cities in US are much safer than anytime outside of maybe 2011-2014.
@ReubenR80027912 Even somebody like you a supposedly reasonable start sounding like right-wing talk radio whenever race or immigration gets brought up. The median FOX affiliate newsroom in even a mid-level market like Fort Worth is a multicultural building of college educated libs.
@ReubenR80027912 Libs & normies can tell when their TV is getting turned into right-wing slop. See the collapse of the Post & 60 Minutes. The moment media starts sounding like their Boomer uncle, people are repulsed and frankly, Ellison knows that.
@constans@ReubenR80027912 I mean conservative media doesn't even really do it either - it's all either single dudes complaining about women or tradwife content, which shows that part of the reason is...we have less married people who dislike each other because of cultural liberalism.
@ReubenR80027912@noamchomsky726 The problem for the GOP is a lot of 2018 Hispanic Dem voters voted for Trump in 2024 or they didn't vote in 2018 but might vote in 2026 because of ICE, Iran, etc.
@ReubenR80027912@mbaharaeen We're at the point an 7 point Democratic win will be treated by some GOP hacks as proof the Dems are still too left when they were all quietly talking about still holding the House only a couple of months ago.
@ReubenR80027912 A 19 year old from Tennessee might not be able to get into AC/DC, but Fleetwood Mac sounds like what they're listening too and by the same measure, so can also a 19 year from Michigan whose heavily into Taylor Swift and other female pop singers.
@21stcentury_ML@ettingermentum Your median low-info Latino 50 year old in the LA suburbs is going to be fine with Berrecca and there's no good left-wing candidate viable by 2030 unless you go the celeb route.
