Talking about algorithms reminds me of when I had to write an essay about a pseudoscience. I chose to write about healing crystals. The ads I got for the next few weeks were...interesting. It just goes to show how easily misinformation can spread through algorithms. #unboundeq

In an age of information abundance, it's impossible to sort through all of the information available on a given topic. Google algorithms try to accomplish this task for us. But what criteria are needed for the top search results? Whose voices are we not hearing? #unboundeq

@jacquelinegemus @bonstewart Yes Jacqueline! I believe we are in an attention-driven economy where digital platforms are constantly competing for our attention. Algorithms try to figure out what is most likely to interest us and keep us watching/scrolling. #unboundeq

@bonstewart A2: I was shocked to hear about the use of AI technology in the interview process. When algorithms compare scores of applicants with existing top employees, it reproduces the very sexist and racist systems that the AI was assumed to eliminate. #unboundeq

@bonstewart A1: I clicked on an Instagram ad for magnetic eyelashes once. Big mistake. I don't wear fake eyelashes and had no intention of buying them but now my social media is jam-packed with eyelash ads. It can be annoying when algorithms place you in the wrong box. #unboundeq

The myth of technology being socially neutral reminds me of The Wizard of Oz. People think innovative technologies are magically free from human bias because they are "machines". We need to pull back the curtain and reveal the ordinary people behind the technology. #unboundeq
