In 2018 a journalist from American Bridge approached Marsha Blackburn on camera and asked about the pharmaceutical money she’d taken and the opioid bill she cosponsored. She didn’t answer. She just walked away.

That bill (Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016) raised the legal bar the DEA had to clear before it could immediately stop suspicious opioid shipments. When top DEA official Joe Rannazzisi warned the bill would make it harder to stop suspicious opioid shipments, Blackburn and her co-sponsor wrote a letter to the DOJ demanding an investigation into him for “intimidating Congress.”

At the time, public campaign finance reports showed she had taken at least $96,000 from PACs tied to the largest opioid manufacturers and distributors since 2012 (not sure where American Bridge was getting the 700k number from). Today in 2026, the total amount Blackburn has taken from the pharmaceuticals and health-products industry stands at more than $1.3 million.
