List of players to have their red cards overturned (or suspended) at the World Cup, since the card was introduced in 1970:
🇺🇸 Florian Balogun
End of list.
They're seems to be some confusion with some American supporters
FIFA did not remove the red card. They are not saying they got the decision incorrect.
They just removed the suspension.
Now tell me, with as much honesty that you can muster, that that isn't BS!
To be clear: Whether it is or isn’t a red to Balogun is now irrelevant. Government interference is a violation of FIFA Article 2 & 15, and the punishment is disqualification and suspension. Nepal was suspended.
This is an admission of the violation.
That is incorrect and is a misread of the protocol.
The key factor is that the VAR shows the referee the incident at full speed, which he did.
VAR protocol literally says that slow motion can be used "for point of contact on physical offences".
Imagine the Anglo-American media reaction if the Kremlin had directly called FIFA during Russia 2018 asking it to review a card for a Russian player.
We’d still be getting Netflix documentaries about it.
FIFA's own rules dictate that if a government tries to intervene in a disciplinary matter - that team is disqualified. Not happening to the USA though, despite trump making that phone call. Wonder why. 🤔
Fuck Trump. Fuck Infantino.
It was a crystal clear red card. Nowhere in the world was this a controversial call. Only in the US, a country used to rules not applying to them. The FIFA has never overturned a red card like this, let alone for such an obvious call.
It's reaaaally low and pathetic.
Recently, FIFA suspended Nepal’s football federation over government interference. Several federations have faced sanctions for the same reason.
Now we learn the White House made a direct call to FIFA asking Infantino to review Balogun’s red card.
FIFA insists the decision was handled by an independent disciplinary panel and could not be influenced externally.
But how is a direct call from a government to FIFA over a player’s suspension not, at the very least, political interference?
It was a red card foul. Just because another referee didn’t give it against someone else doesn’t change that. No one else has been able to appeal or change their red cards because FIFA doesn’t allow it. And again they’re not overturning the card, they’re simply suspending it.
This makes a mockery of the whole tournament.
If the USMNT win, Belgium will have every right to feel cheated, meanwhile the USA’s victory - by their best ever generation of players - will forever be tainted by accusations of favouritism and corruption.
It’s bad for everyone.
No country should be allowed to host the World Cup while imposing discriminatory rules on qualified and participating teams.
This ought to be a very basic requirement.
São 23:30 da noite e o Paulo Raimundo e o José Manuel Pureza estão na rua ao lado do piquete de greve, nunca se esqueçam que não é a direita que está do lado dos trabalhadores
