@SportsCenter@realbobcostas And the 2016 Indians lost the World Series largely due to that hole. They struggled to beat the Cubs without Corey Kluber starting, and then used him on 3 days rest in Game 7 and lost that one.
@SportsCenter@realbobcostas Contend in the regular season - yes. Actually WIN a World Series - Nope. Rosters are smaller in the playoffs and the talent/power limits of small market teams get exposed. Many people cite the 2016 Indians, but they had a huge hole - they had 3 true starting pitchers they trusted
@LiamAkers_WX@MatthewCappucci NWS Grand Forks MIC talked about the process on Weather Brains a while back - they worked with the Northern Tornadoes Project to build their case for the upgrade.
@DouglasTS@slmandel I agree with you. I think the networks and conferences want the front facing debate to be about which conference is strongest because the conferences are the ones negotiating the media rights deals, but yes it’s irrelevant to a majority of fans
@jinco304@Genetics56 Pitt is considered a “state-related” institution because they’re governed by their own independent board of trustees and get very limited state funding. So it’s hard to call a school a flagship of their state when they get so little state funding.
@JonasWX23@MatthewCappucci I think there needs to be a nationwide population density criteria - have seen a couple tornado emergencies issued for areas so rural that there really weren’t any structures nearby that could be EF-2+ damage indicators (no matter how strong the tornado was).
@Jfuenteswx@MatthewCappucci Flash flood emergencies are often somewhat reactive (even many NWS offices have admitted this) because it’s impossible to predict in advance exactly where water will go down to the square mile or where exactly people will get trapped in water. Water rescues are the key.
@jaequeln@senagles@ryanhallyall Technically funding isn’t the issue now - it’s the fact that they were pressured to let a bunch of experienced forecasters retire early last year with no clear plan to replace them. Now they’re trying to hire at such a rapid pace but it takes time to hire and train so many.
@Joel_Weyrick@1sagas1@ryanhallyall Private companies that forecast the weather don’t have the resources and infrastructure for nationwide data collection. They use capital to build their own tools/products to communicate and visualize the data collected by the NWS and NOAA because the data already (usually) exists
@Djahant@ryanhallyall Constitutionally, weather forecasting is a critical component of interstate trade and interstate trade is regulated by Congress. That means weather forecasting needs to be conducted and overseen by the federal government. There can’t be gaps/states that fail to provide it.
@rudedogreyes@PeteThamel Supplemental drafts are not held regularly - it’s totally at the NFL’s discretion to hold one and to accept players’ petitions to enter it. That’s in the NFL bylaws.
@MisterSmith1313@RossDellenger Players have to enter the draft first to be eligible to sign as an undrafted free agent. Sorsby was never in the draft this year.
@LTGICCG@MatthewCappucci@NWS One challenge is: how do you define “populated area”? Need a reasonable population density minimum so there’s more consistency between NWS offices.
