China just sentenced a Japanese executive to 3.5 years in prison on espionage charges. No evidence or details provided. Hiroshi Nishiyama had been in China for two decades and worked for Astellas Pharma and with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in China.

He's one of at least a dozen Japanese citizens arrested on such charges in recent years. Japan's Embassy said the sentence was “deeply regrettable”, and called for early release for Nishiyama other Japanese nationals held in China.

His sentencing further elevates personal safety concerns for foreign businesses operating in the PRC, where current National Security and Counterespionage laws are vague and far-reaching.
