“My mommy's mitochondria doesn't work that well.” 💛
These are the words of our founder, Mitzi Solomon's children, sharing what it’s like when mitochondrial dysfunction affects the person you love most. When mitochondria don’t function properly, energy, health, and daily life can look very different.
This is why Countdown For A Cure was started. Born from one family’s lived experience, unanswered questions, and a gap in science that could no longer be ignored.
Mitochondrial dysfunction impacts millions, yet research remains critically underfunded. By supporting @Countdown4ACure, you’re helping fund the science that brings understanding, treatments, and hope to so many families.
Because cellular energy matters. ✨

The science of aging is advancing fast, and most women haven't heard any of it.
Anastasia Khodzhaeva, co-founder and co-CEO of @YoungGoose4, is one of the people changing that. As a biologist and entrepreneur building skincare around the hallmarks of aging, she knows exactly where the gap is, why it matters, and how to combine scientific rigor with entrepreneurial vision.
This Women's Health Month, Anastasia Khodzhaeva sat down with us to talk about mitochondrial health, postpartum skin, perimenopause, and what most women experience as inevitable is actually addressable at the cellular level.
Funding mitochondrial science isn't a luxury or a biohacking trend, it's the most foundational investment in how we feel, function, and age. This is exactly why Countdown exists: to lead the next era of health.

We’re excited to announce our first research grant of 2026 awarded to Dr. Elias Adriaenssens at the @IMPviennaResearch in Vienna, Austria. This is research that will change how we treat Parkinson's, rare & chronic disease, neurodegeneration, and ageing, at the cellular level where it all begins.
This grant builds on the promise hypoxia has shown in preclinical research and the recent work by Dr. Adriaenssens on a mitochondrial repair system that acts downstream of hypoxia. His work is charting a path toward treatments that selectively activate that repair process, potentially mimicking the benefits of hypoxia without the challenges of prolonged low-oxygen treatment.
At Countdown, we fund the shared biology beneath diseases that most organizations address in isolation. Every grant we make is chosen for its potential to reach across conditions — accelerating discoveries that don't stay in a lab, but move into clinical settings for you, your families, and the millions of people whose lives will be changed by this research.

Fascia is a body-wide network of collagen that connects and surrounds every structure in the body—from muscles and organs to nerves and blood vessels.
It provides structure, enables movement, and plays a critical role in how force, fluid, and signals move throughout the body. Without it, nothing in your body truly moves, communicates, or functions as a whole.
This network is also rich in mitochondria and contains structured, or “liquid crystalline,” water.
Research from Gerald Pollack PhD. and his team at the University of Washington suggests that when water interacts with collagen, it changes structure—creating an electrical charge that can capture, store, and transmit energy.
In other words, fascia is not just structural. It plays a role in communication and energy flow throughout the body.
Supporting mitochondrial function through natural light, movement, deep breathing, and fascia work—like mobility, stretching, and manual therapies—helps maintain the hydration and function of this network.
When your mitochondria thrive, so does your health.

We don’t talk about these as medicine—but maybe we should.
These are the daily inputs that shape how we feel, how we function, and how we age. They support something deeper: our cellular energy.
And at the center of that system? Mitochondria.
Take care of them, and you take care of everything.
Energy is everything.

“Mitochondria are more than just the ‘powerhouses’ of the cell—we need to reeducate the public.”
— Colwyn (CoCo) Headley, PhD, Chair of Countdown’s Scientific & Medical Advisory Board
As @CoCo_Headley explains, mitochondria are the conductors of the cell, coordinating energy, signaling, and function across the entire system. And aging? It’s the gradual process of that orchestration falling out of tune.
At Countdown, our mission is to bring mitochondria into everyday conversations around health, wellness, and longevity.
When we unite scientists, institutions, philanthropy, brands, and a growing community of voices, we accelerate more than awareness—we accelerate the science itself. And with it, the opportunity to transform how we diagnose, treat, and ultimately prevent disease at a cellular level.
Join the Countdown.

Can light influence how our cells produce and manage energy?
New observational research is beginning to explore how targeted red and near-infrared light therapy may affect mitochondrial efficiency, the cellular systems responsible for energy production.
The 30-day observational study was led by Dr. Zulia Frost of Recharge Health, with clinical collaborator Greg Eckel of bVital Clinical Research. Recharge Health co-founder and CEO Bjørn Ekeberg notes that these findings reflect a growing interest in how photobiomodulation may support the body’s cellular energy systems.
Recharge Health are the creators of @theflexbeam, which combines red and near-infrared light and is designed to support recovery, pain relief, and overall wellbeing.
While early, research like this reflects increasing interest in technologies that may help measure and support cellular energy systems.
At Countdown For A Cure, we believe expanding the science around mitochondrial function is essential to understanding health, disease, and human performance.
How do you think technologies like light therapy could play a role in the future of mitochondrial research?

What do mitochondria and a broken-down car have in common? 🚗🔧
CFAC Scientific & Medical Advisory Board Chair Dr. @CoCo_Headley often uses a simple analogy: when a car’s engine fails, repairing or replacing it can help get it running again.
In our bodies, mitochondria play a similar role. They produce the energy that powers nearly every biological process ⚡
At Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Headley studies how mitochondrial dysfunction shapes aging and disease. His research explores how targeted mitochondrial transplantation and mitochondrial bioengineering could be adapted for a wide range of conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, immune aging, neurodegeneration, and cancer prevention/therapy 🧬
Supported by the American Heart Association, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and NASA 🚀, his work reflects the growing importance of mitochondrial science in understanding health, disease, and aging.
⚡ Because so much of health comes back to cellular energy.

Grateful to Benedict Albensi, Ph.D., Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Professor at the Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy at Nova Southeastern University, for sharing his perspective on mitochondrial transplantation and the critical hurdles that must be addressed to make this transformative therapy widely available to support the millions who stand to benefit.
Advancing mitochondrial transplantation will require more than scientific innovation alone. It requires aligned funding, coordinated research, regulatory navigation, and sustained community advocacy. Funding remains one of the largest barriers but it is one we are committed to addressing together.
Alongside @MitoAction, @MitoCanada, @Cure_Mito, @Cure4ARS, and @NorthwellHealth, @Countdown4ACure is working collectively to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and accelerate the path from research to real-world application.
This is what progress looks like: organizations aligning. Scientists sharing knowledge. Advocates amplifying the urgency. Patient communities staying engaged.

Energy is everything. ✨
@AliciaKeys reminds us that energy is a gift and part of wisdom is knowing when to preserve your energy and when to give it. That kind of awareness is powerful.
What we don’t always realize is that how we give and receive energy—emotionally and physically—directly affects our bodies. Chronic stress. Burnout. Inflammation. Aging. Even disease. It all begins at the cellular level.
At the center of it are our mitochondria, the systems within our cells that regulate how we produce and sustain energy.
When we are constantly depleted, our biology feels it.
At @Countdown4ACure, we fund research focused on protecting and restoring human energy at the cellular level because energy isn’t just a feeling. It’s a foundation.
And when we understand energy at its foundation, we change the future of health.
