Matilda Arabella Evans was born today in 1872.
She was the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina.
There are so many things about this amazing woman to write about.
โCharity, compassion, and a love of childrenโ were said to be the the hallmarks of Dr. Evans' career.
Her fees were nominal but what she did for the Black Community was priceless.
It was said that she rode bicycles, horses and buggies to visit the sick.
She also operated a free clinic for African-American children who needed medical treatment and vaccinations.
She founded the state's first Black-owned hospital to treat African American patients in Columbia, South Carolina.
And if all this wasn't enough, she found time to raise 11 children some had been dropped off at her clinic and some from deceased family members.
