Been rereading Delbanco’s magnificent biography of Melville, specifically the chapters about the composition of MOBY-DICK. Melville’s close friendship with Hawthorne, his move to the farmhouse in Pittsfield, MA, and his discovery of Shakespeare seem to’ve transformed his writing.
