Last night, @LastWeekTonight by John Oliver took on the Israel-Hamas War. I applaud the show for acknowledging how complex the situation is and attempting to be balanced - but I fear that the show fails to recognize several key aspects of this conflict. And my biggest fear is that this is the dominant American viewpoint.
I recommend you watch the video, but in case you don't have time, I've included a breakdown of the key points Oliver makes, and what I believe he missed. Let's begin from the end.
1. "I don't have a solution for peace in the Middle East...but a ceasefire has to be the first step":
Everyone agrees that what is happening to innocent Palestinians is a tragedy. Any innocent life lost is unbearable and unimaginable. Calling for a ceasefire and readily admitting that you don't have a solution for long term peace in the region, however, is lazy and a problem in and of itself. A ceasefire without a plan for peace will simply beget more violence, and will render the current war yet another chapter of the Israel-Hamas conflict, as opposed to the concluding chapter. The Israeli government bears a lot of the responsibility to come up with a solution, but calls by the international community for a ceasefire without providing a viable path for Israelis and Palestinians to live free of fear from Hamas are inane.
2. "Life under a blockade in Gaza has been hard for a long time even when there aren't bombs flying" - followed by a quick segment showing terrible living conditions in Gaza.
It needs to be noted that Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2006. The quality of life, or lack thereof, in Gaza is a direct result of the Hamas leadership in the area. The international community, the US and even Israel have funneled 10s of billions of dollars into Gaza since 2006. Instead of putting that money to work in order to build better infrastructure and lives for Gazans, Hamas leadership used that cash to build up their weapons cache, build a complex tunnel system and fatten their own pockets.
3. "Kids should never be losing sleep due to the fear of war" - after showing interviews with several Gazan children living at a refugee camp hoping to go home.
This is of course a true statement. The fact that children are being killed and displaced is an unfathomable tragedy. Full stop.
That being said, Oliver fails to interview Israeli children. Israeli children were kidnapped, have been displaced due to the war, live in daily fear due to rocket attacks, were kidnapped and and were brutally murdered on October 7th. The suffering isn't one sided. And while there is a larger number of deaths on one side, this isn't a math equation. The fact remains, Israeli children were and continue to be explicitly targeted by Hamas. Israel on the other hand takes significant measures to prevent the death of Palestinian children - and once again it's Hamas who causes their own children to die by launching rockets from schools and forcibly containing civilians to areas in which the IDF has warned to evacuate.
4. "More than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza including over 4,000 children":
Once again I will say that any and all innocent life lost is a tragedy. No one wants that to happen and it's truly disturbing. I don't believe that looking at deaths as a numbers game is a useful exercise. Not because we shouldn't recognize and be appalled at the scale of what's happening but rather because the world isn't as simple as that. In ever conflict in human history there have been more people killed on one side than the other. This shouldn't be celebrated, but it simply is the way the world works. War is ugly and horrific, and it's easy for people who live in areas untouched by war to forget that or to construct a Utopian picture of what war should look like in their minds.
But if you do want to simply look at the numbers: these numbers include the thousands of terrorists that have been killed. Surely everyone can agree that the death of terrorists isn't something we should be mourning? Additionally, Hamas members are recruited in early grade school and there are assuredly teenage Hamas terrorists. Lastly, these numbers are reported by Hamas itself - not exactly a bastion of honesty.
5. "Criticism of Netanyahu in Israel is fierce" - which Oliver uses in order to compare Israelis and Palestinians as people who don't support their leaders.
This is partly true. Indeed, many Israelis, including me, not only want Netanyahu out as Prime Minster yesterday, but also hold him partially responsible for what happened on October 7th. However, the Israeli desire to see Netanyahu ousted should not be confused with a lack of support for the current war. The Israeli people are overwhelmingly supportive of accomplishing the missions of returning the hostages and utterly destroying Hamas.
6. Hamas - Oliver aggressively condemns Hamas for their attack
What Oliver failed to mention however is that not only did Hamas conduct the atrocities of October 7th, not only have they been firing rockets at Israel from Gaza and launching terror attacks within Israel since their founding, they explicitly call for the complete destruction of the state of Israel and the Jewish people. this cannot be glossed over - because back to point 1 - what would you have Israel do?
I mourn all the innocent lives lost during this conflict. No one wants war. No one desires death.
I hope for the speedy return of the hostages and a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians alike
