For decades, popular culture and news coverage have disproportionately associated young Black men with savage crime. That perception influences how some people react before a single word is spoken.

Ironically, many of the same political voices who constantly lecture about unconscious bias rarely acknowledge the role decades of failed Democrat policy have played in creating neighborhoods with higher crime, higher fatherlessness, lower educational achievement, and greater poverty. Those REAL outcomes reinforce fear, and ordinary people begin judging individuals by statistical expectations instead of individual character. “The usual suspects” is what they’ll say.

Every law-abiding citizen deserves to be treated as exactly that: an individual. Suspicion should come from someone’s actions, not their appearance.

If we want fewer moments like this, we should be asking why so many American cities have produced the conditions that make people expect the worst. Solving those underlying problems would do far more than another lecture about bias.
