Building USDM1 - 24/7 sovereign collateral for 24/7 capital markets. President & COO @M1XGlobal. Previously CMO @ Genesis Trading. Not financial advice.
Some news: I co-founded a company - @m1xglobal - with my friend @MarkLurie. This week we announced our fundraise led by @paradigm, with participation from @breed_vc.
Tokenized deposits naturally create demand for tokenized sovereign bonds.
If commercial bank money moves onchain, institutions still need a neutral, high-quality asset for collateral, liquidity, and balance-sheet management between transactions.
In the traditional system, sovereign debt plays that role.
Why would the onchain financial system be different?

Today, I want to share a project that clearly demonstrates how blockchain is evolving beyond cryptocurrencies to become a practical tool for public sector innovation.
@m1xglobal works with governments to develop sovereign financial instruments deployed on blockchain and compatible with programmable digital networks. The company brings together experts in law, regulation, and technology, builds the operational infrastructure, and supports the implementation of digital solutions designed to foster sustainable economic development.
In partnership with the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, M1X developed and launched USDM1-a sovereign treasury-backed financial instrument operating on blockchain. It is used to facilitate recurring Universal Basic Income (UBI) payments, providing a transparent and efficient mechanism for distributing funds.
This initiative demonstrates that blockchain technology is already becoming part of public financial infrastructure, improving the efficiency of government programs and creating new opportunities for long-term economic growth.

Governments are starting to bring sovereign debt onchain.
One project I've been researching is @m1xglobal
M1X is building infrastructure designed to connect sovereign capital markets with blockchain rails.
One example is USDM1.
Instead of thinking of it as another stablecoin, the more interesting idea is what sits behind it: sovereign debt that can potentially move and settle through onchain financial infrastructure.
Why does that matter?
Traditional capital markets operate with limited hours, multiple intermediaries and settlement delays.
Onchain infrastructure could make parts of that system:
• available 24/7
• programmable
• easier to use as collateral
• faster to move between financial institutions
M1X is already pushing into the institutional side of this market, including work around custody, tokenized collateral and financial-market infrastructure.
Tokenization isn't only about putting stocks onchain.
Sovereign capital markets could be a much bigger piece of the story.
"USDM1 did not start as a crypto product looking for a use case. It started as a government's answer to a genuine problem, got built onchain because that was the right tool for the job, and is now, eight months later, gaining the institutional custody and settlement infrastructure that lets serious capital actually hold it." https://t.co/sknC9S4h5M
Marshall Islands citizens used to wait for a boat to get paid. Not anymore.
- USDM1: a sovereign bond, born onchain
- Backed 1:1 by US Treasuries
- BitGo adds institutional custody + T+0 settlement
- Live on #Solana, #Stellar, #Ethereum https://t.co/WboxIijk0D
USDM1 can now be held through @BitGo Bank & Trust, NA - an OCC-regulated digital asset trust bank - for qualified custody, and utilized for collateral and settlement through BitGo’s Go Network Off-Exchange Settlement solution.
M1X Global has joined DTC’s Digital Assets Solutions Industry Working Group, alongside members from 100 firms including Bank of America, Citi, J.P. Morgan, Broadridge and Virtu Financial.
M1X Global was proud to participate in @ISDA and @GlobalDigitalFi's Tokenized Collateral Working Group and Industry Sandbox, powered by @OwneraIO - exploring the use of tokenized collateral, including @USDM1, in institutional derivatives, repo and lending markets.

I haven't posted much over the last two years as we've been heads down building and halfway across the world. That changes now - much more to share on what's already been built, and on what's coming next.

Today we're announcing institutional-grade qualified custody and off-exchange settlement for USDM1, the world's first natively issued onchain secured sovereign bond.
Institutional clients can hold this dollar-denominated sovereign bond in regulated custody on BitGo and use it for collateral and settlement through BitGo's Go Network.
Available on Stellar, Ethereum and Solana.

A company called @m1xglobal.
With the Republic of the Marshall Islands, M1X helped design and implement USDM1, the first digital sovereign debt instrument issued natively on a blockchain.
Not a stablecoin, not a CBDC. Sovereign debt. Collateralized 1:1 by short-duration U.S. Treasuries, structured as a fully collateralized Brady bond under New York law, advised by @ClearyGottlieb.
Sovereign debt is one of the largest asset classes in the world. Yet, before USDM1, it didn’t exist onchain.
Today, thanks to blockchain technology, you can find it:
🌏 In the Pacific. The world's first onchain disbursement of universal basic income. Quarterly payments of around $200, by digital wallet, cheque, or bank deposit, set to run for twenty years. Cash-out through MoneyGram going live, and an integration with Bank of Guam, an FDIC-insured U.S. bank.
🌎 And on Wall Street. Available since April and already used in institutional working groups with @BankofAmerica, @citsecurities, @VirtuFinancial, @Tradeweb, and @The_DTCC, answering the need ISDA and the FIA have flagged for government collateral that works in 24/7 markets.
Work at that level sets the bar for the infrastructure underneath it.
That is why M1X chose @dfnsHQ as its core banking system and wallet infrastructure.
✔️ USDM1 lives on Stellar, Canton, Solana and 100+ networks and protocols.
✔️ Accounts, transactions, treasury, and tokenization as one system.
✔️ Governance enforced programmatically, even if credentials are compromised.
✔️ Deployment sovereignty: SaaS, hybrid, or on-premises, with control over key material.
M1X calls it the sovereign layer of onchain capital markets. We're proud to be the core banking it runs on.
Welcome to DFNS, M1X. 🤝
