[11PM] Rockford's AQI is now up to 508. This is WELL into the "hazardous" category. Highly consider avoiding time outdoors if possible. Even healthy individuals can be seriously affected by smoke this dense. Conditions will not improve much until midday Friday.
Several NIU Skycam angles showing the wall of wildfire smoke that just rolled through DeKalb.
This smoke originated from the MN/Canada border and got caught up along a backdoor cold front, which has been drifting SW across the Great Lakes region. This air is unhealthy. #ILwx
Really good outline of where the worst conditions from wildfire smoke are across Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin as of 2PM. Picture shows visibility on the left and satellite on the right. @WxFront
This time of year, there's always a lot of talk about "corn sweat", or evapotranspiration. I looked at how that added moisture from our corn fields will influence the humidity this week in Northern Illinois.
I have an idea... let's take the tropics and push it somewhere else! Look at the rich tropical moisture the GFS seems to think we will get late next week. As it fights with high pressure to the North, we'll see just how much moisture we really get.
HOW TO READ VELOCITY
1. Locate the radar relative to where you are
2. Green = TOWARD the radar & Red = AWAY FROM the radar
3. Imagine or draw arrows and then determine whether it’s divergence (air spreads out), rotation, or convergence (air collides)
Velocity is a powerful tool meteorologists at the NWS use when monitoring for potential tornadoes!
[5:45PM} Scattered showers and even a rumble of thunder persist along the I-39 corridor thus evening. Cells are gradually moving South-Southwest at around 10-20 mph, bringing pockets of steady to heavy rain. Showers will continue to weaken as we lose daytime heating tonight.
Isolated/scattered slow-moving showers/thunderstorms will continue mainly west of the Fox Valley and south of the Kankakee River. Localized heavy rainfall may lead to minor flooding of low spots. Activity will diminish this evening. #ILwx#INwx
[11PM] Visibility is significantly limited by all the firework smoke, with some spots as low as 2-3 miles at times! Visibility may remain limited at times through the night, with some patches of fog also possible.
