Communiqué of the African Union Commission on the Escalation of Tensions in the Middle East.
The African Union (AU) Commission expresses its deep concern over the renewed escalation of hostilities between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and advancing a peaceful resolution.
The Commission believes that these developments risk further destabilising an already fragile situation and threaten international peace and security.
The Commission calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation, and recommit to dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable path to resolving differences.
The Commission has consistently underscored that continued instability in the Gulf region carries significant implications for Africa, including disruptions to global energy markets, increased transportation and commodity costs, and adverse effects on economic growth, trade, and development across the continent.
The African Union Commission reaffirms its support for all diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation and urges the international community to intensify efforts towards a peaceful and negotiated settlement in the interest of regional and global stability.

🇮🇷 Today, I spoke with my counterpart @araghchi Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran. This exchange was the occasion to convey a few messages.
I insisted upon the obligation to respect the right of transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law. According to Belgium, there should not be any obstacle, any payment of any sort.
I told Minister Araghchi that the talks with the US offer an opportunity that must be seized to reach a comprehensive peace agreement. Every effort must be made on both sides to reach swiftly a peace agreement, including for Lebanon, whose territorial integrity must be respected by Israel.
Iran must stop playing any destabilising role in the region, including through the support of proxies. The region and the world have already suffered too much from the hostilities.
I reiterated that all prisoners detained in Iran shall be treated with the respect due to the human dignity. Access to medical care must be ensured. I also called once again for the abolition of the death penalty.

Very good call with President @RTErdogan.
Türkiye is a key partner in a region in turmoil.
Our interests converge; keeping trade routes open, energy flowing and supply chains stable.
We will continue working closely together on these priorities.
The EU appreciates Türkiye’s efforts to support de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution to the Iran conflict.
We also discussed the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus question. We underlined the importance of EU-Türkiye relations.
The EU is ready to support the UN-led process at all stages.
The images shared by extremist Minister Ben-Gvir of detained Flotilla activists are shocking and unacceptable. This treatment of detainees violates basic human dignity. I raised this directly with my Israeli colleague @gidonsaar and will summon the Israeli ambassador. 1/2
Germany is in panic over Chinese companies taking over its markets at home, abroad and in China. Having spent quite some time in China in the 2010s, I can’t help but thinking back to the arrogance and quite frankly racism of German expat businesses people. Chinese engineers with Ivy League degrees speaking fluent English and German looked down upon by German engineers with a degree from some German university, unimpressive English and less than two sentences of Chinese. The Germans didn’t see it coming because they couldn’t imagine Chinese people becoming better at what they are doing than themselves. An industry insider told me at the time how keen Chinese entrepreneurs were to collaborate with German car companies on EV development. But all the Germans worried about was they are going to steal our IP. Well, here we are.
NEW: The Future of Development Cooperation Coalition has released its first report, The Development Balance Sheet.
The report calls for a more country-centered understanding of development cooperation — grounded not only in aid flows, but also in domestic resources, institutional capability, trade, investment, and long-term transformation.

We are getting there....surpassing Asia as the region with the highest GDP growth. This was unthinkable for many, given the woes African economies have experienced since the pandemic. However, let us not forget that GDP is a poor reference when it comes to capturing the entire spectrum of development challenges.
Did you know between 1957 and 1976, there was a regular bus service between London and Calcutta, India. The 32,000km, 50 day, 2-way bus route is the longest in the world.
The bus had sleeping bunks and even a kitchen! For just £145, you get to travel with food & accomodation. The bus would stop at attractions and for shopping in Vienna, Istanbul & Iran
The bus ride took passengers from England to Belgium, West Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Northern India.
Deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure are clear violations of international humanitarian law (IHL). They only mean more suffering among the civilian population. IHL was designed to shield civilians and essential services from conflict. IHL must be respected, in all conflicts and by all parties.
