New York City will require IDs to prove you live in the city in order to shop in the city owned grocery stores. So you need an ID to shop in the city’s stores, but it would be racist to require an ID to vote. Perfection.

NYC Mayor Mamdani's government-run grocery stores face a firestorm after his EDC chief floated a "library-card-esque system" to prevent bulk buying and resale of discounted goods — a move critics immediately torched as hypocritical given Democrats' staunch opposition to voter ID laws.

The city insists it's not an identification system but a "practical inventory management tool" akin to a ShopRite loyalty card. It’s understandable why Mamdani wouldn’t want non-New Yorkers to be able to shop at his city-owned, heavily subsidized grocery stores.

Allowing non-New Yorkers to shop at those stores would make no sense.

Just as it would make no sense to let noncitizens vote in U.S. elections.
