In the harrowing retreat from Russia, Napoleon, significantly ahead of Marshals Davout and Ney, was beset with growing anxieties for their safety. Prepared for the worst with a freshly prepared vial of poison, Napoleon made a decisive move; personally leading his Guard on foot to confront the Russian forces blocking the road.

As they advanced, artillery shells erupted, but Napoleon, undaunted, pressed forward. His resolute action bolstered the morale of his men and also prompted a significant shift among the Russians; General Miloradovich, recognizing the Emperor's presence in the heat of battle, strategically withdrew from the road, allowing Davout to rejoin Napoleon's forces.

Meanwhile, Field Marshal Kutuzov, positioned nearby with the main Russian army, had a crucial chance to encircle Napoleon and end the war. However, upon realising that it was Napoleon himself leading the march, Kutuzov refrained from reinforcing the blockade, choosing instead to observe in awe.

@AMikaberidze Absolutely loved reading this book, so much amazing detail and primary source material used! I had no idea that there was this level of contention on the topic either prior to reading. Arguably one of my favourite Napoleon books I've read thus far!
