@kissmefreakk@remfreak AXS transfers are independent from Viagogo. Viagogo can’t do anything, it’s just a marketplace. If those tickets were for another buyer, and you keep them, they won’t be able to go.
@SmashJT She’s an amazing hair artist who produces quality, game ready hair for black characters. Her work helps to better represent black people in games. Why are you attacking her? People like you are the problem.
Get ready for discourse on this great article:
People might wonder how a 90-person studio can create a full-sized AAA title. Jason hints at this, but the reality is that these teams won't stay 90 people. These studios will rely on hundreds of skilled outsourcers from Shanghai, Nanjing, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chengdu, Manila, Warsaw, Ho Chi Minh, Kuala Lumpur, and Sao Paulo to handle the heavy lifting more cost-effectively. As these countries focus on their own games, (like with Wukong and MGS Delta being largely made in China) we could see a seismic industry shift, leaving Western talent behind. If you don't nurture local junior talent, in lieu of a 90 person studio with only seniors that outsource most of the game, eventually they will be more adept than us in a decade - and perhaps they deserve to be.
@keep_wolin @Lib_Development@stan_okl Better quality ingredients is hilarious. Most American food is jam packed with preservatives and is heavily processed. Just look at American bread….that is not bread lmao
Adobe finds itself under fire for its recent spyware-esque Terms of Service update, which forces Photoshop and Substance 3D users to provide the company unlimited access to their projects.
And that's only the tip of the iceberg: https://t.co/OVOKZOimjP

You can save yourself a lot of psychic damage by understanding
1) the games industry gained around 250k jobs (on top of the existing jobs) from 2020-2022
2) the games industry has fired around 16k people since then
3) belt-tightening will remain until interest rates drop
so, enough time has passed now for me to talk about why i decided to leave Blizzard. a mixed year with great teammates, but a management that mistreated, lied to me, gaslit me, gave me a fake promotion, and HR that refused to help.
buckle up friendos. 💪
I just want to be clear on my stance about AI.
I don’t disagree it’s the future. But we’re at a crossroads where it is either a positive future or an avoidable hellscape for creatives and the media we create.
AI driven tools can be super useful, I’m a big fan of things like upscalers, or anything that supports artists in achieving their maximum creativity. Remove the drudge work. I wish more developers actually asked what we would find useful. AI UVs??? Please. Garbage AI 3D models with shit UVs why? We don’t want that, we want things that improve our work not replace it with low quality work. If these tools were genuinely for helping us they’d be helping us optimise, not trying to do everything for us but worse.
Unfortunately most generative AI is used as a massive fuck you to artists. Given that it’s trained on the hard work and dedication of so many artists you can’t deny there’s ethical issues. These models would not be capable of what they are without artists. The very people it IS replacing.
Artists should have a choice in whether their work and names are included in datasets and I hope the law catches up to the tech. Which it inevitably will.
It’s sad we have to poke massive corporations showing that their copyright can be infringed when there’s theft at a grassroots level. I can only hope they see value in pushing the law to protect us as well as them given media industries exist off the back of creatives works.
I’ve experimented with OpenAI extensively, it’s no secret I would love something to render my work as I’m very design focused and lazy (I paint 2-3 times a year). But the reality is it doesn’t understand what it’s generating and modifies what I need too much.
As I said in a comment the other day I tried training it on over a decade of my own work, 800 images, and it would always water it down 50/50 with everything else it’s learned from.
Just like Jurassic park, my dinosaur had frog DNA to fill gaps. This is no use to me, a good designer needs conscientious decision making. It’s like working with a junior, except a junior can grow and learn and give me their own ideas. This can’t, because a big part of ideation is cultural, how we think and design is cultural. AI has no culture. It homogenises everything. Good for illustration, bad for concept art.
I havnt used it in a few months so it might be better now but I grew bored of it and understand it well enough to know pushing it any further goes against my values until the models are ethical.
I am concerned this will exacerbate issues the games industry already has. We lack seniors+. Studios already don’t invest enough in juniors, how few positions will there be when they realise Ai is cheaper than a junior? But an AI can’t be a junior, we need that investment in PEOPLE.
I hate universities teaching it. You should be teaching fundamentals not prompting. It’s not a skill, you just have to learn that it’s driven by data tags.
I don’t agree with non-art disciplines being taught it either because university is when student designers and programmers should be learning to collaborate with artists. Real people.
15 years ago I had to design 80 generic store fronts for APB. That’s the kind of work I would have gladly seen gone to AI. I could have cleaned them up, they’d be better, faster. I could have then spent more of my time pushing my skills for important billboards.
I only support this if the models are ethical, if artists can choose if their work is included and if it is they are remunerated fairly as with stock images.
Right now I recommend concept artists learn 3D. Zbrush for organics, blender/fusion/plasticity for hard surface. It never hurts to learn 3D for concept regardless of how this resolves.
🧵Old School Environment Art Tests🧵
If you recognize any of the art tests in this thread then you've probably been on a few adventures in the games industry.
My knowledge of these is mostly EU/UK, in the public domain, and from around 2009 to 2015.

@MichaelG_3D Also worth sending in speculative applications to anywhere that interests you - a lot of places have internal job listings that aren’t public or may use 3rd party recruiters directly to save internal HR time/costs. My job was a speculative application that wasn’t advertised :)
@JaredSobotta@JonathanBenaino How do you approch the 3D bricks that get placed on the edge of buildings? Do those bricks share the tiling textures or do they have bespoke textures created?
