The Japanese understand that games are entertainment, meant to delight the players. There is more of a lighthearted nature in Japan, where they see the reveal of a trailer to be part of the fun. I’m not sure why the west enjoys the drama of spoilers and tearing things down. The west sees delight in cracking the PS5 and piracy in general.

We have games like vagrant story that was released on disc but is only available at fairly high prices on eBay. If it was on the PlayStation store you’d know you’re getting a working copy at a more reasonable price. Don’t get me started on Sega Saturn game prices. People praise Steam since they can still play games they added in their library over 20 years ago. No fear about the laser in your disc drive breaking down. Digital is the best way forward for game preservation and reasonable prices.

It’s a very vocal, but extremely small minority that care. If it were large, then way more physical copies would’ve been sold where it wouldn’t have made sense to stop disc production. Brands like Oppo, who made the best bluray player on the market, left the industry years ago because not enough people cared about physical media, and that is an industry where physical media looks far better than the digital counterpart.
