I wonder about those who see 380 as the human made foundation of the Catholic Church.
Because, at least on the face of it, the justification was to preserve the Nicene orthodoxy. And it was, despite similar Arian attempts by previous emperors, successful.
It’s, if we accept the human made premise, also the longest human institution thats not contradicted its own founding. The USA hasn’t even made it 300 years without contradicting its constitution. And yet, Nicene orthodoxy has been continuously preserved in Catholicism. Two oddities of miraculous proportions.

I believe ‘crush’ adequately expresses quickly and effectively dismantling Arian congregations and leadership throughout the empire, but if we consider the Goths I understand if you feel that’s inaccurate. Why do you think 380 succeeded in supplanting the apostolic church so well when the previous attempts by Arian emperors failed so miserably? And is there a particular faithful and apostolic congregation you were thinking of that was subjected?

@pjfahey Not too much empathy in the world. But there is too much misplaced and untethered empathy, where as long as someone is in my tribe or hated by the enemy tribe they must be “understood” and supported no matter how much evil they’ve done.
