Whenever I post about pension investments on this site my replies fill up with people who are under the mistaken impression that NYC's pension funds are in terrible shape. But the opposite is true.

In the fiscal year that just ended, our funds generated a robust total return of 13.0%, net of fees. This substantially exceeds our target of 7.0%. Our assets now total $325 billion.

These results are so strong that they reduce the City’s required pension contributions by $6.3 billion over the next five fiscal years.

Across our five systems we are 86.6% funded, better than most other public pensions in the nation.

Two Klansmen drove around Mobile, Alabama looking for any Black person to kill. They found a 19-year-old walking to the store for cigarettes.

His mother spent the next six years dismantling the Ku Klux Klan in a courtroom. Michael Donald. March 1981.

They beat him, killed him, and hung his body from a tree on a residential street, across from a Klansman's house, so the city would see it in the morning.

Police initially suggested it was a drug deal.

It was not. It was a Klan retaliation for a jury's failure to convict a Black defendant in another case — a life taken at random to send a message.

Beulah Mae Donald refused every version of the story except the true one. She pushed until the FBI reopened it. One killer confessed. The other was executed in 1997 — the first white man executed in Alabama for killing a Black person since 1913.

Then she did the thing nobody expected. She sued the United Klans of America itself.

In 1987 an all-white Alabama jury awarded her seven million dollars. The Klan had no money — so it handed over its national headquarters building. The organization was finished.

A mother buried her son and bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan.

BREAKING: Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign GETS ROCKED as more than 20 Republican political figures back James Talarico. A former Texas Ranger explains why he made the jump.

Donald Trump may have halfheartedly tried to boost the chances of Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton with his Trump rally disguised as a political convention these past two days, but no matter how much he tries to put lipstick on this swinish Texas Attorney General, even members of his own party are crossing the aisle to endorse Paxton’s Democratic opponent, James Talarico.

Just yesterday, the Talarico campaign released a list of over 20 Republican leaders who’ve chosen to reject their own party’s corrupt candidate in favor of the squeaky-clean Democrat. The list features a plethora of former officials who’ve turned their back on Paxton, the Trump- endorsed MAGA loyalist who somehow survived impeachment by his own party after the depth of his corruption was initially revealed.

That last name on the list, David Maxwell, a man who worked closely with Paxton as his former Director of Law Enforcement, sat down for an interview recently to explain why he took the unprecedented step of joining Team Talarico.

“I spent two hours with James Tallarico,” Maxwell began. “I came back and thought about him. Number one, I saw no deception. He answered all my difficult questions. He didn't dodge anything. He didn't give me the Texas two-step when I asked him a hard question. He didn't go all the way around the bush and never answer. He hit it head-on.”

“He comes to this campaign and this initiative with a sense of service, a sense of service in his background,” Maxwell continued. “He was a teacher. My mother was a teacher. I have granddaughters who are teachers. Both my wife and I have served Texas our entire careers. That means something to me. That means something.”

Maxwell, a straight-up law and order Republican, values character over partisan politics and knows that Paxton’s character makes him unfit for any office whatsoever.

“You know, in my line of business, in my experience, it means so much to see someone who's sincere,” he explained. “Now, I have been around politicians my entire life. I've served five governors. I've met and been around four presidents. They're all very interested in Texas Rangers. But I say that to say this. He's so different than other people I have encountered in politics. I think he's the man who needs to go to Washington, D.C., and Ken Paxton needs to go home.”
