Today in 1982: Jim Eisenreich, a rookie outfielder for the Twins hitting .309, left the game at Fenway in the middle of an inning.
He suffered from twitching and it became uncontrollable when Boston fans continuously taunted him.
When the team returned to Minnesota, Jim checked into a hospital for treatment. Doctors diagnosed him with Tourette's Syndrome.
He tried several comebacks the next few years, but could never control his symptoms. He retired from baseball in 1984.
Over the next two years, doctors found a way to treat his Tourette’s, and Jim returned to baseball in 1987 with Kansas City. He was named the MVP of the 1989 Royals, a team that featured Bo Jackson and George Brett.
After his comeback, he went on to play 12 more years in the big leagues, and batted over .300 in 5 of those seasons.
He now has a foundation that helps children with Tourette’s Syndrome.

🚨 50 YEARS AGO TODAY: Dodgers legend Rick Monday became an American hero.
Two protesters ran onto the field at Dodger Stadium trying to burn the American flag… and Rick Monday sprinted in like a damn boss and SNATCHED it right out of their hands.
No hesitation. No apologies. Pure patriotism
@TheVinScully with the call!
Rick Monday never threw a pitch, but he was responsible for one of baseball’s most famous saves.
The Hall of Fame will honor his 1976 rescue of the American flag during the annual Awards Presentation on July 25. https://t.co/uaW3dkom0v
Moe Berg travelled to Switzerland to attend a lecture by the eminent German physicist Werner Heisenberg.
Berg`s mission was to determine how close the Nazis were to an operational atomic bomb, and if they were close, Moe Berg was to shoot Heisenberg and then kill himself.
But after listening to the lecture, Berg decided they were not all that close, and his mission was aborted.
Instead of killing him, Berg walked Heisenberg back to his hotel, picking his brain about physics along the way.
"Moe Berg’s crucial contribution to the war cause, was that he could offer Oppenheimer, General Leslie Groves and other Manhattan Project leaders “reassurance in some ways that there wasn’t something they were missing” regarding a potential German bomb".
Sam Kean
For his work with the OSS during World War 2, Berg was awarded the "Medal of Freedom".
Moe Berg turned it down!!
"Maybe I’m not in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame like so many of my baseball buddies, but I’m happy I had the chance to play pro ball and am especially proud of my contributions to my country.
Perhaps I could not hit like Babe Ruth, but I spoke more languages than he did"
Morris "Moe" Berg.
Catcher, served as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services during WWII.
"The brainiest guy in baseball and the strangest man ever to play baseball.
He can speak seven languages, but he can’t hit in any of them."
Casey Stengel.
"I know Moe that you are in counterintelligence, which I assume means you are against intelligence".
Red Smith interviews Moe Berg.
The 1934, the 'Connie Mack All-Star' tour of Japan was a pivotal, 18-game exhibition series in November-December 1934 featuring legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx
Moe Berg wassn’t there for his ability to play, but to spy.
While playing tourist in Japan, Berg takes hidden photos of important military and industrial sites for the U.S. Government, photos which will come in handy during WWII.
"If he wasn’t real, you’d have to invent him"
ALWAYS, ALWAYS in my HOF!!!!!!

General Washington, this is Henry Knox. He's the most energetic and intelligent officer in the Continental Army outside Boston.
His only defect is he's a 26 year old bookseller with no military experience.

Today in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was publicly read for the first time from the balcony of Boston’s Old State House.
Abigail Adams recalled the celebration: "bells rang, the privateers fired...the cannon were discharged...and every face appeared joyful."
This is an exact pan from our house. While I acknowledge it’s been around for a while, I didn’t realize it’s been around that long. Time flies. Must be an heirloom. #treasure
#OTD in 1389, Richard II names Geoffrey Chaucer chief clerk. We read Canterbury Tales in high school (then again in the original Middle English in College). Always thought the Miller would be a fun traveling companion. #HistoryMatters https://t.co/6UOdI66NJ7
