Someone drew my attention to these trending pictures of a Nigerian man who got wedded to his foreign male partner in a church before a priest in the US.

The person expressed disappointment that the Catholic Church could bless such a wedding. The person almost said that he's quitting the Church (Akacham🤣).

Even without carrying out any investigations, I knew that such a union cannot take place in the Catholic Church. But to be able to address his deep concern, I decided to investigate and found out that the wedding did not take place in a Catholic Church, but in an Episcopalian Church.

Here is the thing: the Episcopalian Church is part of the Anglican tradition, historically linked to the Church of England. While it shares some similarities with Catholicism in liturgy and structure, both differ in the areas of doctrines and magisterial authority.

For instance, many branches of the Episcopalian Church especially in the United States officially permit same-sex marriages and allow their clergy to officiate and bless them, as is the case in this particular union.

The Catholic Church’s position is entirely different and clear. The Church teaches that marriage is a sacrament instituted by God, defined as a lifelong union between one man and one woman, ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4–6; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1601).

The Catholic Church cannot bless or celebrate same-sex unions.

This position is not a matter of culture, politics, or personal opinion, but of divine law. The Church does not have the authority to redefine what she did not invent.

While the Catholic Church has consistently affirmed that persons with same-sex attraction must always be treated with dignity and respect, the Church does not and cannot equate same-sex unions with marriage nor bless them as such.

So, before anyone says that they're quitting the Church because of these viral photos, please note that the viral wedding did not happen in a Catholic Church, and it does not represent Catholic teaching or practice.
