Torn by the rivalry between two generals vying for power, much of Sudan has turned into a battleground, leading to one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. My dispatch from Sudan with photos from @HaigesVincent in @newlinesmag https://t.co/719F2y6df2
The statement “Pakistan has a right to defend itself” right after the last two strikes by Pakistan targeting a university and a medical center is quite something. @kajakallas, do you really want to go down in history as a whitewasher of war crimes?
Economic crises are often measured in statistics. But they are lived through everyday decisions:
Can we buy meat this week?
Can we replace worn-out shoes?
Can we afford the journey?

3.2 million people fled their homes here in Iran as a result of the US-Israel air campaign. Many have lost their life savings, homes, and loved ones.
Now, people are being hit by the economic crisis caused by the war.
In NRC we do all we can to support both war stricken Iranians and Afghan refugees.
But our funding is incredibly limited.
Iran hosts 4.4 million Afghan refugees.
Despite the fact that this is one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries, we simply don’t have the resources to provide even emergency relief to all who need it here.
Without a concerted new effort, the effects of this war will be felt by families here for years to come.
Donors cannot turn their backs at this critical time for civilians.

First he was possibly dead, then severely wounded, then not in a position of authority, then Iran in disarray, now he’s playing a critical role. The blockade is working. Now we have Project Freedom. Now we don’t. JD is on his way to Islamabad. No, it’s Steve & Jared. Now no one.

A big step for Afghanistan’s digital future.
The Afghanistan Hope
In these photos, young people gather on the very first day of the newly opened @aksosbookstore in Kabul.
These moments remind me of something deeper: despite all challenges, a nation turning toward knowledge, curiosity, and growth.
The path to a brighter future begins here in books, in ideas, in the simple act of reading.
A second day of marvelling at the swathe of German commentators who appear to believe that Friedrich Merz is responsible for the actions of the president of the United States.
The Western media is manufacturing consent for US strikes on Iranian civilians through "poor factchecking, misleading framing, and the apparent welcoming of killings"
Here's an example from the Strait of Hormuz:
The interview is painful to watch, and the tweet accompanying the clip is even more egregious.
The Telegraph reporter calmly explains that smuggling of fuel from Iran to GCC states is rampant and continuing. He accurately explains that it's driven by arbitrage as Iran subsidizes fuel.
CNN anchor keeps describing the smugglers as part of the "Iranian navy" and a "threat", confusing them for IRGC speedboats. Both the CNN anchor and the reporter then seem to agree that Trump should take action against the fuel smugglers. That would likely entail the killing of civilians.
None of this is normal: the poor factchecking, the misleading framing, and the apparent welcoming of killings.
Israel's Digital Occupation
"What Israel has done in Lebanon over the past year and a half amounts to running a "digital occupation laboratory”, an experiment that is being watched closely around the world and may change the shape of this growing war." https://t.co/NusRLv5K0S
Germany's Merz welcomed Israel's attack on Iran in June 2025, and said Israel was "doing Europe's dirty work for it." He welcomed Trump's war on Iran in Feb and dismissed its illegality.
Now, as a rat jumping off a sinking ship, he claims he always had doubts about the war.
The Germany that proudly stood against the Iraq war in 2003 is long gone. The German government has turned Germany into a vassal of the US.
But this vassal wants its cake and eat it too: Benefit from America's wars if they go well, while washing its hands of the war if they go badly.
This is why America should refrain from turning once good allies into vassals. It benefits neither in the long run.
