Students need coaching around managing emotions, staying on task, and acting appropriately just as much as they need coaching on their academics.
Teaching is teaching, regardless of the skill.
4. Children and young people do best when they are supported and contained by the people who are closest to them; and the most powerful 'therapeutic' interactions happen in day to day relationships. We need a system that recognises, values, supports and enhances this.
Wee reminder for us all as the new term looms. The better the relationships *as perceived by the children* the less need to manage behaviour. If they trust we will keep them safe, provide structure & like them we vastly reduce the number of children who still require additionality
'Peer Orientation' is attachment gone wrong!
When threat happens we all look for attachment. One of the biggest issues youths face is not being sufficiently attached to safe adults. So they run to their peers to be the answer to their social and emotional problems. Disastrous!!
Always remember hearing this -sometimes we stand in front of our young people shielding them from situations they are not ready to face, sometimes we stand alongside them supporting them through, sometimes we stand behind to catch them and build them back up if itโs overwhelming
Today a previous student from my elementary school who is now in high school ran to my school instead of going home off the bus because he was upset. He felt the school was his safe place he hasn't been a student for 5 yrs. This both inspires and hurts me. This work matters.
Great teaching doesnโt come from a box or a script โ itโs built through relationships. Relationships uncover student strengths, fuel their success, and build the confidence to be their best.
If a young person is distressed,it narrows their cortex. No matter how good an educator you are or classroom you have, you're not going to get much change out of a child because that part of the brain you're trying to reach is unavailable. Regulation is essential in education.๐ง ๐ฑ
