Back in 1955, the Council of Europe reviewed more than 100 designs, and chose this one as the winner.

The 12 stars stand for completeness, not countries. The design was chosen so it wouldn’t change with borders or new members.

We need health leaders who not only have knowledge and vision, but also the skills to navigate complexity, build consensus, and inspire action.

In Brussels, together with EU Commissioner @OliverVarhelyi and @EU_Health Director-General Sandra Gallina, I was honoured to open the Health Union Fellowship (HUF) as Patron of its 2nd cohort.

Its mission echoes the Pan-European Leadership Academy and the global health diplomacy programme I launched few years ago. All recognize that leadership is not just about managing systems - it is about diplomacy, advocacy, and uniting diverse actors to drive health transformation.

This becomes more urgent in a time of “permacrisis” – from geopolitical instability to climate change, chronic diseases, rapid technology shifts, and rising emergencies.

We need health diplomats who can open the right doors at the right moment, placing health at the centre of political and investment decisions.

I commend @SandraGallina, @EU_Health, HUF Ambassador @josepfigueras for championing the next generation of health leaders, and I am grateful to @WHOAFRO Regional Director @ProfJanabi for joining this event.

The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD2023) is a major source of information on population health globally, regionally & nationally.

I congratulated Prof. Christopher Murray, Director of @IHME_UW and co-chair of @TheLancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health, on its release, and stressed that the new data will help policymakers set priorities and guide resources worldwide, and serve as a rich source for data analysts.

In our meeting on the margins of #WHS2025 in Berlin, we also discussed deepening @WHO_Europe’s collaboration with IHME to strengthen evidence-based policymaking across the Region.
