New Zealand is alarmed at injuries to UN peacekeepers and damage to UN facilities in Lebanon caused by the Israel Defence Force as recently as yesterday.

Any targeting of UN peacekeepers is a violation of international law and is completely unacceptable.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon and the UN Truce Supervision Organisation play a critical stabilising role in the region and must be part of efforts to reduce tensions. 

Israel’s actions undermine the United Nations' ability to carry out its mandate, which includes mediating conflicts and providing humanitarian support.

As a UN member, Israel has signed up to international norms and obligations. We expect it to comply with them.

The UN system must be allowed to carry out the responsibilities entrusted it by the UN Security Council and Member States.

At a time when the world faces acute security challenges, talking to one another has never been more important. Expelling Ambassadors, or declaring diplomats persona non grata, is precisely the wrong direction to go in.

New Zealand supports the role of @antonioguterres, as UN Secretary-General, to travel widely around the world to support peace & prosperity and foster dialogue & understanding.

We were pleased to host him recently in Auckland to discuss the challenges the world faces - and to travel with him to the Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga.

We regret Israel's decision to declare the Secretary-General persona non grata. We reaffirm the important role he and the UN system can play in promoting conflict resolution - including in the Middle East.
