Today is the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. By honouring the past, we recall our duty to strive for a brighter and more secure future. NATO remains firmly committed to BiH’s stability and prosperity, for the benefit of all.
In Ankara this morning, a real privilege to engage with these talented @SAISHopkins scholars and future leaders working on NATO issues and the Western Balkans. Thoughtful, well researched ideas and recommendations from every one of them. Thank you @edwardpjoseph for the opportunity!
Ankara Summit: Proud of our @SAISHopkins & Western Balkans Emerging Experts and grateful to Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska, former SACEUR & Nat'l Security Adviser GEN Jim Jones, and NATO Ass't Secretary General Ambassador Kevin Hamilton for engaging with them. @MunSecConf provided an ideal setting at the main Ankara Palas venue for this candid discussion of our 2026 Recommendations to @NATO for the Balkans and beyond. Giving new meaning and vitality to youth leader engagement in our SAIS 'Seeing is Believing' project.
Having spent some of the most memorable chapters of my diplomatic career posted to London and Ankara, and now to NATO, I appreciated sharing some observations about the role of Türkiye and the UK within our Alliance and their valuable contributions to NATO's partnership agenda. Thanks for the invitation!@BurcuAOzcelik @MunSecConf@RUSI_org@setavakfi #AlliesinAnkara
UK–Türkiye cooperation is not peripheral to NATO’s future — it sits at the heart of the Alliance’s next adaptation agenda. Honoured to have convened and chaired @RUSI_org’s NATO Summit side event in Ankara: “Flanking the Future: UK–Türkiye Cooperation in NATO’s Next Chapter.”
We were privileged to hear opening remarks from H.E. Salih Ayhan, Deputy Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Türkiye (@valisalihayhan), followed by reflections from Hüseyin Arslan, Chairman of YDA Group and AYDA, our strategic sponsor and partner.
Grateful also to Ambassador @KHamiltonBE , Ed Arnold and @LungescuOana for a rich discussion across defence, industry, infrastructure, geopolitics and NATO policy. A timely conversation as the UK and Türkiye deepen defence cooperation — and as NATO works to turn political commitment into practical capability.
With gratitude to @MunSecConf@setavakfi@muratyesiltas
