The timeless aroma and enduring legacy of Assam Tea will take center stage at the prestigious Summer Fancy Food Show 2025, scheduled from June 29 to July 1 at the Jacob Javits Center, New York City. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Assam Tea- a historic milestone celebrating the origins, global journey, and economic significance of India’s most iconic brew.

On behalf of the Government of Assam, it will be my honour and privilege to join Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India, to inaugurate the India Pavilion on June 29, which will also showcase a specially curated “Assam Tea Lounge”.

Spearheaded by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. @himantabiswa, and initiated and supported by the Consulate General of India in New York, this initiative builds on the momentum of Advantage Assam 2.0 held earlier this year. It aims to promote Assam’s rich tea heritage while expanding trade and export opportunities in the U.S. market. By uniting established tea companies, small growers, and emerging startups, the event reflects a shared vision of heritage, innovation, and global collaboration- deepening economic and cultural ties between the world’s two largest democracies.

The “Assam Tea Lounge” will offer visitors an immersive experience with live brewing bars, sommelier-led tastings, and artisanal pairings featuring cookies, chocolates, and more. Guests can trace Assam Tea’s evolution through storytelling sessions, video interviews with growers, and showcases on sustainability, women-led cooperatives, and certifications like Rainforest Alliance. The space will be enriched with Assamese design motifs- from tea garden visuals and local handicrafts to cultural performances that showcase the state’s vibrant traditions.

To mark the bicentennial, the booth will feature a “Masala Chai Cart,” a tea passport giveaway, and collaborations with partners such as Kolkata Chai Co., Elements Truffles, and renowned Indian chefs for dessert and cocktail demonstrations using Assam Tea. A special high tea will be hosted for media and influencers to enhance digital engagement. Branded giveaways- including tea pouches, coasters, and “Brew Your Mood” cards- will offer visitors a fun, memorable way to explore Assam Tea.

Assam’s tea legacy began in 1823, when Scottish explorer Robert Bruce, guided by the Singpho tribe, identified the indigenous Camellia assamica plant. With the first commercial plantation established in 1837 and India’s first Indian-owned tea estate founded by Maniram Dewan in 1842, Assam quickly emerged as a cornerstone of the global tea trade. Today, it remains the world’s largest contiguous tea-growing region, producing over 52% of India’s tea- including robust CTC, orthodox, organic, and GI-tagged varieties.

The event will also convene leading industry players such as the @Indiantea1881, @TataConsumer, @GoodrickeTea , @LuxmiTea, @HUL_News, Woolah Tea, and Aromica Tea, alongside active participation from the Indian diaspora and international food industry stakeholders. Institutions like the Tocklai Tea Research Institute and platforms such as the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) continue to drive Assam’s global competitiveness through innovation and transparent trade practices.

This 200-year celebration is not only a tribute to Assam Tea’s stories past but also a forward-looking initiative by the Consulate General of India. Through strategic branding, global partnerships, and cultural diplomacy, Assam is asserting itself as a premium tea exporter and tourism destination- poised to captivate the next generation of tea enthusiasts worldwide.

As we celebrate this milestone, I warmly invite the global food and beverage community to join us in honouring the timeless story of Assam Tea- a story of heritage, innovation, and the unmatched aroma of excellence in every cup.
