We can move on to continuing the conversation of the unique challenges of separation and the effects that it has on these innocent and often forgotten and unacknowledged children who deserve to have their voices heard! #NoKIPLeftBehind
Thank you so much to all of the amazing people who were able to participate in spreading awareness and in #breakingthesilenceandthestigma for #KIPAwarenessWeek.
We could not have done it with you all!!!
Also the number of children with a father in prison has grown 79% since 1991! We can no longer ignore these children and their right to have support through these difficult times! #NoKIPLeftBehind#BuildingBrighterFutures
Having a parent who is incarcerated is now recognized as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), which is different from other ACEs because of the trauma, stigma, and shame it inflicts on children #SupportOurKIPs#BreakingtheSilenceandtheStigma
KIPs need so much support yet they have trouble receiving it because of the shame, stigma & isolation they experience. These children need a voice to express themselves & can no longer be ignored! #NoKIPLeftBehind#LoveLetters https://t.co/U8FTxtZGkM via @YouTube
On the last day of #KIPAwarenessWeek it also happens to be Father's Day. This is a very difficult day for KIPs and their incarcerated fathers. A day that is supposed to be filled with love, happiness and celebration is often overshadowed by hurt, confusion, anger and sadness
Did You Know? A majority of people that are incarcerated are parents. Since 1991, the number of children with an incarcerated mother has more than doubled, and more than 4 in 10 of those mothers reported being a single parent prior to their arrest. #BreakingtheSilenceandtheStigma
For the 7th day of #KIPAwarenessWeek the focus is on the family. One of the most difficult challenges a family faces is when a member is removed temporarily or permanently. The caregivers of KIPs need support with the child/children while also receiving support for themselves!
A first-person look into the effects of parental incarceration in the lives of the children left at home. @KIPawareness https://t.co/oGTbzzCznF https://t.co/5MMHJ6pcZL
On Day 6 of #KIPAwarenessWeek, We must break this transfer of stigma to ensure that each child has the right to be listened to, to have a relationship with their incarcerated parent and to feel safe and secure in expressing themselves. #StarttheConversation#NoKIPLeftBehind
When you incarcerate the person, you incarcerate their whole family - don't let the stigma stick to those innocent and vulnerable children they do not deserve a #SharedSentence#KIPAwarenessWeek
Please continue to participate in our 3:50 Challenge by staying off your devices for 1 hour from 3:50-4:50pm & don't forget to tag us in your photos with #BreakingtheSilenceandtheStigma
Supportive programming for KIPs help to increase social skills, life skills, leadership development, school attendance & achievement while building self-esteem & allowing these children to have a space to express themselves!
One of the easiest ways to decrease the negative effects of incarceration on these vulnerable children would be to provide more supports to them! #NoKIPLeftBehind#BuildingBrighterFutures
Day 5 of #KIPAwarenessWeek is here! Today, we want to continue to express how important it is to provide support to KIPs - Did you know separation due to incarceration predicted worse outcomes for children than parent-child separation caused by other reasons! #NoKIPLeftBehind
This is why during #KIPAwarenessWeek we have a petition that acknowledges the need for a Canadian Bill of Rights for Children of Incarcerated Parents! If you have yet to sign the petition please visit this link to show your support! https://t.co/cu3Z3PkYo9
Kids of Incarcerated Parents continue to go unacknowledged, unheard & unrecognized! These innocent children need the right to have their wellbeing considered, deserve to be asked about decisions that affect them & the right to have their opinions & voices heard #SufferingSilently
Today is Day 4 of our #KIPAwarenessWeek & today we are highlighting Children's Rights! Canada has agreed to uphold the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child yet an issue arises actually putting these rights into practice! #NoKIPLeftBehind
Children's visits with parents can help to heal the pain of the loss while strengthening parent-child attachment allowing for protective factors to be built. These visits are critical to children's well-being! #SupportOurKIPs#NoKIPLeftBehind#BreakingtheSilenceandtheStigma
Did you know that within the provincial prison system there are no-contact visits between children and their parents? That means children can potentially go YEARS without getting something as simple as a HUG from their parent. #KIPAwarenessWeek#BreakingtheSilenceandtheStigma
