Much of the reason @PEPFAR reauthorization has been stymied is because it's caught in the political crosshairs of abortion. But there's also an institutional memory issue: only 15% of current members of Congress were in office when PEPFAR was first created (more data follow):
What could happen if @PEPFAR, the U.S. signature initiative on global health is not reauthorized by Congress this year? KFF experts @jenkatesdc and Kellie Moss explain in a commentary for @ThinkGlobalHlth.

Recently, @PEPFAR has elevated its focus on sustainability, placing it “at same level of priority as epidemic control.” Our NEW analysis provides an initial look at how it is currently defining/approaching sustained epidemic control at the country level.

More information about PEPFAR’s approach and progress toward sustained epidemic control may be forthcoming, as PEPFAR is expected to release a new strategy and sustainability roadmaps for some countries. Plus, reauthorization discussions are likely to begin later this year.
Our NEW @KFF brief finds that the @PEPFAR sustained epidemic control picture is multi-layered, and there is significant variation across countries and across dimensions.
